M80 Sherpa T Rear Wheel And Axle

I am having a difficult time getting the rear wheel axel etc. back together. I took pictures before disassemly and it is set up the same way now. But when I tighten the axel nut the wheel will not turn. I know it needs new bearings and seals but .. I was hoping to get it back together to give it a once around the yard and work out some of the other set up issues (brakes, clutch etc.)

Does this set up look right?

Thanks

Set up is as it should be.

However everything looks badly rusted on there, brake set up is OK, but again very corroded.

It may be that the bearings are seizing on to the centre bearing spacer which is a tube that mates up with the inner race of the roller bearing.

If you want to remove the wheel bearings, first heat up the hub before you try to shift the bearings, use a hot air gun if you can and gently heat by a circular motion and keep checking the heat, either by spitting on it and see if it hisses back at you (crude I know). Try not to overheat the hub.

Then, when the hub is nice a hot, using a long drift, move the centre spacer out of the way and take the bearing out evenly by drifting it, using four points of the inner race. Top, bottom, left side, right side... repeated.

First race will fall out followed by centre spacer, then turn wheel over and do the same to the other bearing, now easily attacked with the drift, same method.

Never try to remove bearings cold, there is just too much risk you'll take a chunk of hub out with the bearing!

These are the before photo everything has been cleaned up, re rust and painted

I can get it back together as in original photo but when I tighten the nut it stops spinning freely... loosen the nut abit it gets better but the nut is barely on and the cotter pin will not fit into the hole in the axle

Had the same problem. Let see if I can remember what it was. A loose bearing spacer inside the wheel I think. Take off the rear wheel and when you look inside the brake and where the axle goes through there should be a spacer. If not then when you tighten the axle you pinch the hub instead of the bearing.

Sounds like something isn't correct and is binding under pressure internally. Have you fitted new bearings?

Big John

is that the hub with two bearings on one side? Is the centre spacer in right?

put the spindle in the empty hub and spin, add brake spin, add spacer make sure its all ok, then put together in the swinging arm.

I agree I think the spacer between the brake flange and the hub may be missing and the brake is flange is rubbing against the hub. It is a small spacer but does need to be there in order for it to work properly. Did you get in touch with Acme Bultaco?

I need to go through the whole thing and look at the suggestions put forward by the group and try and figure it out a bit better I will take better photos and post them so that the group will be able to see what is going on more clearly and the condition of all of the parts.

Bultacosteve no I have not gotten in touch will Acme just have not had the time but once again thank you for the help with the contact info.

I might be passing the through Vancouver next week (stop by ACME) but I will be with a group going up to the Shuswap

I had a chance to pull everything a part and look at everything and something was not right because the brake plate was rubbing against the inside of the hub and scared it all up and left shavings on the inside of the hub.

I layed out all the parts I have in the order I think they should be in now that I see what is going on. (on the right side the seal has broken down and is stuck to the tapered spacer)

Inside the hub everything is solid and rotates easily

Please advise if the order looks right I will get new bearings and seals as well as brake shoes

Thanks Sunny

This looks familiar, don't ask me how I know. There is a spacer that goes in there.

So the order goes?????

Left to right

axle, wide spacer, cam, frame swingarm, spacer, brake body, spacer (fits in seal and against bearing), hub, tapered spacer, frame swingarm, washer, cam, lock washer, nut, cotter pin

Thanks for the help

Sunny

I can re-check tonight when I get home but this is the best of my recollection. I have somewhere in my archives a picture of the parts, (it's been a while since I've been into the M49) I like to snap a shot when taking things like this apart. With digital cameras almost free it can't hurt. Especially if you're not intimate with the parts.

Yeah it was doing exactly what I mentioned. Brake backing plate rubbing on hub. There is supposed to be a small flange type spacer between the hub and plate. It will fit into the seal that is in the wheel. If you don't already have one get a parts manual for the bike. Lynn Mobley from bultaco parts will have one in stock. Try them at bultacoparts.com they are very friendly and ship promptly. the exploded diagrams will show where the differences are and at what serial number any changes were made at. I'm actually surprised that such a big spacer is used on the left side of the axle. If you are coming through town give colin @ acme a call a few days before as he doesn't have a store front shop and he is by appointment only.
