pedronicman
Timing setting is absolutely critical on all bultaco's with points as this can vary a hell of a lot from model to model (i mean different models of sherpa) and they need regular adjustment as the timing does change I would suggest replacing the points with a genuine Femsa part not a pattern EFFE part as they are crap. If that fails then replace the LT coil Does not matter where you mount the condensor. You have only 4 things that can go wrong on the ignition system - 1. LT coil 2. HT coil 3. Points 4.Condensor 9 times out of ten people will always change the HT coil first as it is the easiest to change and people don't realise there is a LT coil- BUT 99% of the time it is the LT which goes wrong - usually this is replaced along with new points and condensor, correct timing and everything works fine. Just to check wires from LT coil - Black wire- goes to points-HT coil Green wire MUST go to earth - either on stator plate mount or up under tank on frame Red wire is for Horn only- blank this off/tape up if not needed Yellow wire is for lights only and runs from seperate LT coil - tape up/blank off wire or take off lighting coil completely. See how you go......
swooshdave
I always look at the points before the carb, bings set up right last a long while untouched. Ah, yes. I mean for an Amal.

Can you confirm 2.5mm BTDC for my 1999 199A 350? "BUT 99% of the time it is the LT which goes wrong - usually this is replaced along with new points and condensor, correct timing and everything works fine. martinm
If Pedronicman says swap the LT coil he is probably right......will drop you a pm to explain Regards Martin

alan_nc
Has the problem been solved? I haven't heard anyone mention spraying WD40 around the carb boot and then around the crank seals. Quick, simple way to see if the rubber parts are no longer doing their thing. bulpedro
For what it's worth, my alpina had spark with NO condensor on it! I was in the process of moving it to under the tank. I tried grounding the plug to the engine and hand cranking it. Sure enough, spark! I don't trust the spark test except as a field test. Good luck! motovita
I got the .36 mfd condenser, installed it, and as was predicted it made no difference. Today I will order a secondary coil. I'm not very confident but I'm reduced to guessing what to replace next.
motovita
New secondary coil (high tension) + one kick = running Bultaco. I've never seen a coil fail like that before. The cracked condenser case was a red herring, it worked fine. I suppose when one rides thirty year old motorcycles surprises should'nt be surprising. Next event, a week from Sunday. We'll be there. wayne_weedon
Glad you're sorted. At least along the way you got the wiring tidied up/Simplified? Never had a Femsa HT Coil fail (yet!) LT yes. Wayne....
