cwbashaw
Hi, I'm a new rider in MD, I live in Frederick and have been riding bike trials for years. Looking for people to ride with and learn from as well. I'm getting ready to buy a bike in the next few weeks, and am trying to decide if I should buy a mid to late 90's bike or if there is any reason I should consider spending more on a newer bike from about 2004 or 2005. Considering I'm an entry level rider will an older bike hold back my progress? Or am I better off with an older bike because I'm sure I'll be dropping it alot while I learn. nh014
Maryland Rider If you haven't already seen it I suggest you log on to the website for the Mid Atlantic Vintage Trials at www.mavt.org. There are a number of local meets over the next couple of weeks, with one this Sunday in Woodstock Va. Not that far from Frederick. You'll see both vintage and modern bikes and will be in a better position decide which you might prefer. MAVT events are for riders of all ages and on both modern and vintage bikes. Join us at one of these meets and you'll probably end up with more advice than you ever really needed.

cwbashaw
Thanks for the info everyone, I'll probably be going to the D6 event on the 4th. Hopefully I can buy a bike when I'm there or maybe before if I can find one locally. Can anyone direct me to a link for competition rules? I plan to compete next year and want to develop good habits from the beginning.
tryalsryder
Hi, I ride all the local series, at least until I move in November. I suggest a bike in the early 2000 years to begin with, unless you can find a barely used bike that is older. Things are more likely to be worn on old bikes and would require more work to keep it in good running order, hence defeating the purpose of spending less. But you will always want to look for a bike that is well kept. Most of the bikes being run in this area are 2000 and newer, with the exception of the vintage guys. Most series follow the NATC (national) rules. Focus on Section 6. Most other sections of the rule book do not apply to local events. No section time limits either. http://www.natctrials.org/ Click on Rules to the left.
cwbashaw
I looked at the rules, I guess they're not too far off from bicycle trials rules. I'm leaning towards getting a 2001 Scorpa sy250, is there any reason I should not go for it, or anything I should know about it?
cwbashaw
I ended up buying my friends 96 Fantic section 250. Hoping to get out and do some riding soon.
