brian r
I thought there was a mechanical help section around here. What happened to it? Any how, any one working on these little pit bikes know if the advance is built into the little black box?
shercoman2k8
Hey there, Mechanical section was removed back in april or may, maybe earlier cant remember. The pit bike, im presuming your on about ignition advance. The advance is controlled from the CDI unit, or as you put it... Black box. The standard one you can't fiddle with, no advance/retard. If you want a programmable ignition you'll have to invest in an aftermarket racing CDI. The ignition is controlled here as the bike uses an inner rotor iginiton, or IRK. So you may notice the lack of a stator on the bike. From what i've heard, on a standard bike you wont notice the difference, anything with a few mods and it'll give a bit of extra kick and top speed... I beleive this, is what your after. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CDI-REV-BOX-HONDA-XR...907163002r21100 I've also heard about the Kitaco race system, helps take the low end bog from the engine, and eliminate the Rev Limiter! Fits Honda CRF50 XR50 - used without the wiring harness Fits XSport, Thumpstar, Most Copy Chinese engines Fits Zongshen, Lifan, Jialing etc etc etc The best Power CDI Unit available apparantly. Have a look on here to see which one fits on your bike... http://www.monkeybike.co.uk/acatalog/Elect...;_Ignition.html Hope this helps, Jamie Edited September 28, 2009 by shercoman2k8

brian r
Hey Cope, How's it going? Here's the deal, I'm back playing with the 200cc TL125. It has the CDI from the XL200. I bought a coil and "black box" off ebay for a pit bike. Now it looks like I've got a mechanical advance & an electronic advance. Probably explains the popping at about half throttle. Looks like the oil ring was sticking after it warmed up a little too. I hope to get this thing working better soon.

Maybe you can run some MMO or ATF through her to unstick the rings? About 50/50 with the oil I would think! Couple of good runs and flushes may help! brian r
No it's a CDI from the XR200. Top end is 200. The CDI has a mechanical advance. The black box is from a modern pit bike. No Points. Nothing in the electrical system is TL. Only the cases and gears. I filed the oil ring groove an hopes that it would loosen up the oil ring. brian r
The box I have isn't programmable. The TLR doesn't have the trigger on the cam?
mcman56
I recently bought one of the cheap inner rotor kits for pit bikes from ebay. I set it up on a mill to test and it gets 12 degrees of advance from 660 rpm to 2720 rpm. I have been told that 10 to 12 degrees of advance is normal for these. If you want a CDI with no advance, I understand that the two stroke ones have no advance. How much mechanical advance does the TL have?
