Registering Your New-framed Classic In Uk

Hi,

If, for example, I built a Hi-Boy framed TL125 using a new SM frame and an old TL125 as the donor machine, can I register it for road use? If so what's the process?

Will it have a Q plate or can it take the number of the donor bike, for example?

Thanks in advance.

What Totalshell said really. The problem being you have a new frame and old parts bolted to it so when you go through the rigmarole you will end up with a Q plate which you could do without as your newly built treasure will no doubt cost a fair bit and I don't think you can insure other than 3rd party on a Q plate.

Best to use id off donor frame and when the bike is built scrap the donor frame. Not 100% legit but best way tbh.

When a frame is supplied from Japan there are no numbers on it so it's the same sort of thing really.

Thanks - I feared it might be a minefield.

Friend of mine is building a kit car and apparently he can use the reg number of the donor car because a certain percentage of it will be used in the kit car - interestingly a new chassis is being used. Not sure how the percentage is measured or if the same principle can be applied to bikes.

Cheers.
