Unsettleing Observations

Started looking foreward to sunday and ended up remembering last weeks trials day out.. On the way we encountered a (what's the collective term) gaggle of cyclists on the road clearly making a statement about thier presence riding 4 & 5 abreast with the "outrider" supervising passing traffic...ok no problem carried on...about 3 miles up the road we came across a hord (about 40 or 50) of Ramblers crossing the road .they were walking what used to be a track we used in local trials..once again there was one guy controlling the traffic whilst the rest of them crossed the road..no problem. As i carried on the old mind started wandering ..if only we as a body of sports people were as organised and vigilant as these groups regarding land access /useage perhaps we wouldn't be reduced to riding around pocket handkerchief scraps of land once or twice a year whwn nobody else wants to use them(bird shooters seem to always get priority.providing ramblers havn't stopped them). Then we got to the trial and forgot all about it! Am I getting to be a grumpy old man...paranoid..seeing the world from a twisted perspective....or jusr bored tonight?

From one grumpy old man to another Chewy I take your point. From an environmental perspective cyclists and ramblers like to think they occupy the moral high ground, whereas we are just grubby motorcyclists in the eyes of most of the public. When it comes to pheasant shooting we'll never compete. You do realise that round our way these guys pay on average

A Dr. here in SoCal did just that, one of the riders went through his back window. The Dr. ended up going to jail.

Cant/wont speak for the ramblers, but maybe the cyclists were riding like that to make themselves seen and ensure that all the no brain numptys in vans (again not all) actually slow down or give them room when they overtake? Most of these idiots (bilco etc??) dont give a second to think what would happen to a person if they clipped their handlebars at 60mph and dragged them to the floor! The majority of these to$$ers also have kids of their own as well, and presumably see the rage with a machine with pedals rather than a person like themselves or their kids... You would not be happy if you were doing a road trial and loads of idiots passed you within a foot doing 3 times your speed and nearly knocking you off, not once but most of the day, you would soon get sick of it.

I am sure that there are idiots who ride cycles just the same as there are idiots who rides trials bikes (see above), but you shouldnt treat the majority by the actions of the minority, you should all know that being trials riders.

As for slamming on the brakes well boxing.gif

Theres a diffrence between one person riding he's way to work on a bicycle trying to keep as far in as possible so not to be a pain in the a*** to other road user's,then you have the poser Dickheads bunched up on the lanes thinking there riding the tour de france, these are the ones causing danger matey.

I thought they could only ride 2 abreast and when traffic comes from behing they should go into single file.

These posing racer Dickhead types deserve all the abuse they get. There riding on adrenaline and as we all know your in your own little bubble when that kicks in,this is ok on race tracks but not public roads where car drivers have to pull out into an oncoming lane to overtake and cause a possible head on smash with an oncoming vehicle all because the bunched up bicycle riders hav'nt got a clue whats around him.

I'm with you on that one bilco.

I do object to the local cycle club holding organised time trials along the nearby dual carriageway, complete with chequered flags, marshals with flags and pace cars. Imagine trying that stunt but with motorbikes, I've even been red flagged in my car as the to**ers come round the roundabout...... this is one of my pet HATES!

Our sport and off road riding generally has suffered considerably because of the intolerance of others, just look at the loss of green lanes. Ours is a minority interest and we will do nothing to help ourselves if we are seen to be intolerant of others who are legitimately enjoying what they like to do on a Sunday morning no matter how perverse it may appear to us.

So obstructing the public highway is "legitimate" is it?

Sorry cant agree. Two abreast feeding into single file so as not to obstruct the free flow of traffic is "legitimate".

Imagine the out cry if we ride two or three abreast blocking the road?

Also isnt time trialing racing on the road by definition ? My insurance strictly forbids, as in will not pay out, that. I wonder what the cyclists insurance policy states???? Oh yes i forgot they dont have any do they. If one of them runs into your car, child, self etc etc you would have to take out a personal action against them.

Nowt against cyclists, ramblers are another matter, but Larry Licra and his cronies belong on the track NOT the highway.

Oh for goodness sake...

Posers-erm trials riders then!

Dangerous, that will usually be the driver of a killing machine then?

Riding two abreast is legal and they do not have to pull in, most with common sense will do so.

All this excitement and hatred of other road users just boils down to inconvenience then yes? What about a horse on the road,a tractor,a 50cc moped, a trials bike doing 40mph, all involve crossing the white line to pass. The person in the large motor vehicle is the potential dangerous one, according to the highway code you should wait till the road is clear before overtaking anything. Any attempt to do so before is pure impatience even if you have to wait 10 mins, better than killing another person yes?

I live in the sticks and am inconvenienced every day by other users of the countryside, like all of above and tourists and townies thinking that they are driving down an A road down a back lane, trials riders blocking entances to venues, gangs of poseurs on push bikes, runners, dog walkers, etc etc etc, it's pure intolerence of something that you are not interested in not to have the patience for 5 mins. Yes there are large groups of idiots on push bikes who get in the way, the same as large groups of any idiots (trail riders near me) but i dont ever recall suggested trying to maim or kill any of them!

As for the time trialling, (i am one of those tossers you Wonker!) i get your point but... at most of the nationals there are regularly marshalls on the road stopping or warning vehicles that trials bikes are joining the road from a field, these are the same trials bikes that are also trying to get to the finish in on time and have there course marked and flagged all along the way. You are not supposed to be chasing against the clock on the road on a trials bike either.

Im sure that you would not mind waiting for a couple of lads coming out on the road on their trials bikes when you are going along in your car as you would have an interest??

Again yes there is the minority, just like there is you Bilco, but that does not mean that all are the same.

Seems a shame to get so excited about being delayed slightly...

Image in you live in Fort William and dont like motorcycles, bet May is hell

If it cant be shown , then do not expect tolerence to be given...

Exactly well said.

"Imagine the out cry if we ride two or three abreast blocking the road?"---erm most do

And dont get me started on these bloody classic bike runs where there are loads of the old banger motorcycles, riding round together blocking up the road and dumping oil evreywhere creating a danger to other road users!!!

Oh and i have insurance--- not many trials riders do!
