bengtphorqs Posted February 20, 2010 Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 Working on the refurb of my '74 TY250A and it's time to address the wheel bearings. The owners manual makes reference to an "L" shaped tool inserted into the spacer sleeve and then whack it out with a hammer. Sounds like a crude method to me, but what the heck. I tried using an Allen wrench and some PB Blaster but no joy. Any suggestions on how to remove the wheel bearings? What kind of tool works? feetupfun Posted February 20, 2010 Report Share Posted February 20, 2010 The spacer between the bearings can usually be moved sideways enough to get a 3/8"steel drift or punch to contact the inner race of the bearing on the far side to where you are. If you warm up the hub the bearing will come out without taking any aluminium with it. The special Yamaha tool does work but an allen key has a radius at its bend that prevents it transmitting enough force to the spacer. You can replicate the Yamaha tool by fitting a piece of 4mm round steel into a cross hole in a piece of 8mm round steel. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Have a look at my blog and locate the article "How to .. Wheel Bearings" published in Feb 2008 and it will give you a detailed guide with lots of reference pictures to help along the way.
