19col58
I'm planning on upgrading the lights on my 2002 Pampera. My first thought was to fit a 45/40w quartz headlight bulb but I dont know if the alternator would handle it. So I thought fit an LED bulb in the tail light. They are rated at 1.2/1w as against 21/5w so this should save me the 20w I need for the front. Then I found a wiring diagram, it shows that the only component fitted after the rectifier is the fan motor. My limited auto-electric knowledge tells me that the lighting circuit is A/C and that LEDs only work on D/C. Am I right in thinking this and does it matter anyway, should I just put the 45/40 bulb in and see what happens. In case your wondering I'm going to be using the bike on the road mainly and for a little light green laning. I know it's not an ideal road bike but I bought it because its different and it reminds me of my youth when all trail bikes were 2strokes, except Hondas XT 500s and Britbikes of course. I had several trail bikes ranging from a brand new DT175MX ( 1978 and Edited March 14, 2010 by 19col58
pete_scorpa3
Stick the bulb in. It's DC.

19col58
This has been in my head all day. The lighting circuit must be AC otherwise, why would the fan motor need a rectifier? and the voltage regulator is marked as 12v AC on the wiring diagram. I've found 30/30w quartz bulb with the correct fitting for the headlight so I'm going to use that and leave the rest as standard.
19col58
According to the parts list I found on the Gas Gas USA site the Pampera should have a 45/45w headlight anyway, so I'm looking for the soloution to a problem that doesn't exist.
