I'd given the carb a good clean out and blown out the air filter and given it a fresh coat of air filter oil so thought i'd fire it up quickly. started after a few kicks which is what i expected what with the carb cleaner etc and then i can't remember if i turned the choke off and it began to rev or it just began to rev. anyway it ended up on full revs..no kill switch! couldnt stall it (bike leapt out the garage, not my best idea to be honest. so i just pulled the carb off which killed it. stood it all back up, out carb back on and warily started it, after a few kicks (and one kickback/backfire)it started with the choke, i flicked the choke off and the revs started to rise a bit again. left choke on and took it for a ride around the driveway, stopped and stuck choke off, revs were still a bit high but better, twisted one of the screws in the carb and it seemed to slow idle down (just wondering whether i've changed air/fuel mix - which screw is which?!) basically i'm just wondering what caused it?! the throttle cable was free, i unscrewed the throttle before putting the carb back on to make sure no issues there and couldn't see anything wrong so put it all back together, seemed to be fine after that :S Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
welshoneder Posted June 15, 2010 Report Share Posted June 15, 2010 1st thing I'd check is that you throttle cable is free not just on carb end sometimes when you remove carb the calbe comes lose and slips out of throttle holder then when you re-assemble bike the calbe out gets caught on the retainer on the throttle (the one at on your handle bars) because the outer sheath gets caught up it effectively opens the carb to full throttle because the inner cable has to cover a greater distance. All sound very complex some how but its really simple, make sure you throttle cable outter is seated properly both end!! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
tonybroad Posted June 15, 2010 Report Share Posted June 15, 2010 check that whatever traps your carb needle is trapping it properly otherwise the needle can stay up even when you shut the throttle the joker who had my 290 sherco before me put the clip ABOVE the thing that retains it - every blue moon i'd snap back the throttle and it would stick wide open, i'd kill it then start it again and everything OK - funny looking back but not that funny at the time trying to cling onto the damn thing good luck tony Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
tom2010 Posted June 15, 2010 Author Report Share Posted June 15, 2010 cheers, i'll pull the carb back off tomorrow and just double check everything, i assume it must be something like that as it hasn't done it before (although only started it 2 or 3 times since i bought it...) one more thing... I was messing with the screws on the carb, trying to change idle but think i changed the mixture screw (idle is one with spring on? mixture screw is just a flat blade head.?) whats the best way to reset mixture, i was trying to adjust the idle so turned it nearly all the way in then back a bit when engine started to die, seemed to be running quite nicely sounding a lot differet but happily idling away! so is it best to pull the plug and check then reset. which way makes it leaner? cheers!
