When you go to buy a new car, your options are base model base price, and adding extra's adds cost.

I see many posts on adding things to bikes like the fat bars, wheels with no rimbands etc, these can be personal choice or an improvement over the stock item, bottom line it comes down to cost.

It must be cheaper to put the part on at the factory, than replace with an upgrade after you have bought the machine, in MX it's after market bits and a whole shed load to choose from, trials is so small aftermarket parts are not a big industry so fewer are about.

What if these options were available before you bought the bike!! would you put in an order for the new machine with your dealer tricked out with anodized gold rims, fat bars, acront rims, CD payer :wall:

Not sure about factory options on dirt bikes, however on BMW Roadbikes you can order factory options as follows -

Different Screens

Pannier mounts

ABS Brakes

Paint schemes

Tyre choices

Electronically adjustable suspension at the press of a button

Radio/CD players

Different gearbox ratio's

Additional driving lights.

On bikes - BMW are at the fore-front of factory options in biking and virtually every new bike is'built to order' on a 3 month factory waiting time.

Don't expect to go into the dealer today and get a new bike for this Sat...most are pre-sold.

The benefits are happy owners getting what they want, the factory knows in advance what to produce, so they don't end up with a surplus of unsold stock to unload onto the market (checkout Triumph,Yam and Honda roadbikes), which keeps residual values higher than other marques.

After taking delivery of their new steed, most owners then fit aftermarket parts from numerous sources, just like Trials riders.............

I think its better for trials after market parts, gives you the chance to play around with the bike and even the smallest of parts can make it feel like a new bike all over again.

You must remember that every rider is different and each rider will have their own personal feel for a bike...take Dougies bike, not standard, but if we were to ride it, we'd probably hate it...who knows.

Aftermarket parts allow you to add that little personal prefrence to your bike, which is great...the cost is a bit of a kick in the nuts.

After market parts are a little boring in the trials line, if you seen one thing, you've seen it all. Every website sells the same things.

However its interesting when someone posts a japanese parts website with things we've not really seen before...

Although, in all seriousness, Id be suprised if a few of you brought parts from japanese sites...is it really worth all the currency conversion, delivery costs, complications...and if theres a problem, a translator?

In my opinion, standard bikes are the best the manufactures can make at the lowest cost...what you do after it is up to you.

This is one thing that has always frustrated me about trials in general. As has been said you can get all sorts of bolt on,stick on paste on type stuffin mx and nearly all other sports that are a bit different . And for trials ...nowt really. Why , mainly cos most riders dont want to be remotely different !! Comments like "why have you done that" and "oh looks nice but how long will that last" really pis$ me off. Are they frightened to be different cos if they look like straying from the norm the mrs will bollock em??

I remember when the scorpa first came out folks were saying how crap the fat bars were , and then ....BINGO gas gas bring out a bike a few years later and they are great and its ok to like em !!

I think the most of the problem is that us folks who dont/cant afford a new bike regularly are in the definate minority !! And so why change or modify yer bike if you dont intent to keep it that long.?? (although nobody thinks of just changing over the bits) and who cares if you all keep jumping on each others bikes cos they are identicle.

And before anyone tries to have a go at me its 5 years since i bought my last bike !!! :wall:

Heres another slant on the topic.

Having already said that I would rather add bits myself, than have the factory do it, I dont to be honest tend to add anything anyway.

Agree with you mostly Marky Boy..but there are some people who maybe think, that they just like they way their bikes look standard anyway.

I guess it depends on if we are talking about changing the way a bike looks..or the way it performs??......personally I think my Beta is the best looking bike on the planet standard!! :wall::P:P:P ...so I dont really wanna see it change. But I DO keep adding lots of scratches and dents to it :P

I just brought a silencer with a straight pipe and it is longer then the standard (mitani one).

Riding round the car park today after fixing the bike up, and the noticable difference is HUGE, now the bike actually pulls properly like its supposed to rather then with the standard montesa silencer.

I think a lot of the parts we look at we think wont make that much of a difference to the performance of our bikes, but they really do!!
