Centrifugal Fly Wheel

I was thinking the other day (doesn't happen very often so hear me out). :wall:

A heavy flywheel is useful once there's a bit of momentum (if you wanted the momentum), but having a lighter flywheel is better for zipping away from a standing start.

So....I don't know whether this already exists, but how about a centrifugal flywheel:

The bulk of the weight stays at the centre of the flywheel at low revs (held in by springs), and centrifugal force pushes the weights outwards at high revs.

I reckon some sort of damping is needed as well to stop the weights flying out to the outside immediately when you give it some quick revs.

Does it already exist? Is it a bad idea? Any other comments? Should I get out more?
