returning to trials

hi everone,

have decided to get back into trials after 15 year break, i used to ride with the kent youth and then erith and district before joining the army sort off forced the sale off my 94 ty 250, moved into the sports bike scene whilst serving and loved every minute as was based in germany, not so fun coming back to uk speed cameras, jobsworth coppers, third world roads ect ect...

So thought i'd pick up where i left off and luckily enough my dad donated me his 03 sherco 290 as he's not as young as he used to be and has decided to hang up his trials boots,

I was suprised (although should'nt have been) that i'm not the aspiring dougie lampkin that i once thought i was, after years off riding hell for leather thinking this is as good as it gets, i seem to have lost the balance and throttle control needed to even pull off simple manouvers on a trials bike,

I always put my good riding on a sports bike down to the skills i learnt riding trials, but i find myself now on a completly different type off machine which has none off the charateristics off my old ty 250,the clutch is so light that with gloves on i can barley feel it, the bike is so light it is like a push bike under me, the power delivery is intantanious and i'm sure is going to bite me,just to highlight a few, i have found that i am starting right back at the very start and hoping that the old adage that an old dog can't learn new tricks is'nt true,

I'm looking forward to my first trial with the bexleyheath and district club and was wondering if there was any born again trialers with any tips for this old dog lol....

many thanks Will

Welcome back!

Yes, well that 2.9 can bite you! And after a long layoff such as yourself, I found much the same, it is not just you!

First thing is to get a SLOW throttle tube on the thing! Feel free to join the Sherco threads for more info, as this has all been covered before, and we will again.

Cheers,

MC

Hi,

sounds like you are a little ahead of me, I too used to do the schoolboy trials thing, on a TY175, looking to get a modern style 250 bike at this time, so interested to hear your commets on how these new bikes ride, I am late 40's so hope there is still some life in me to do some trials, but guess there will be a need for practice, I just hope my local clubs will have some ground available to get some.

I will let you know what happens when I get a trials bike.

Thanks guys,

The bike already has a slow action throttle so i think its just gonna take practice to get the feel off the bike,

I had a bit off a potter round today after a fair bit of mucking about to free the clutch plates i know its a common thing on shercos so i'm not too concerned by it, what does concern me is the kick start slips real bad, i was wondering before i take off the cover and have a look if this has got anything to do with the clutch sticking or if i have to replace the ratchet mechinism,

any info would be gratfully received...

thanks again Will

Probably best taken to the Sherco forum, as there are several here to give good advise!

Cheers,

Oh Mate,

best thing i did was get back into trials after nearly 25 odd years. just got a newer bike, so so so different to my 1980 Bultaco. so easy to control. Mind you, the power delivery is a lot different as well. My misses nearly wet herself as i narrowly missed wheeleying through the niehbours fence. where abouts are you based?

kind regards,

Tom,
