Indoor practice area in the SW

Morning all,

I guy I know is in the process of converting a huge warehouse into a skatepark and has a bit of extra space. I suggested to him he make a small moto trials area, with the justification that it can be used for pushbike trials too.

Does anyone know if this sort of thing has happened before? Do you think it would be workable?

A good idea only caveat to bear in mind is the (now disapearing) deep pockets of trials riders! Good luck keep us posted. He may have problems with insurance but there may be ways around this with practice day permits under "cover" of ACU club.

There will be some health and safety regs around adequate ventilation. Although in a big warehouse you 'should' get round that with warehouse doors. Otherwise it's expensive extraction systems.

Not sure I can see Push and motor bike trials co-habiting but sounds like a good idea and would help get some positive focus on trials along with a tie in with other extreme sports.

Keep us posted

Yeah, I would have thought skateboarding was already pretty high on the list of sports insurance companies don't want to touch so if they can do that, bikes might sneak in too.

Ventillation is an interesting point, but they manage in Sheffield, right?

Anyways, I'll keep nagging the guy and see what comes of it. Then let y'all know.

Interesting....

I build skateparks for a living. The two would mix perfectly in my opinion. In fact, I think that more alternative sports (I hate the word extreme) should get together and make things happen.

I've often wondered why MX practice tracks don't have a couple of freestyle kickers situated somewhere on site. Seems like a missed opportunity to me.

Yup, agreed. Makes sense to draw in as many revenue streams as you can. Which parks do you make?

We build ramps for everyone, skaters, bmx, inline, scooter, whatever. Generally we meet with the users and see which is biggest in that local scene and design the park to suit. Everyone on the firm either rides or skates. I'm a bmxer myself.

We consult on concrete parks and have them built by specialist concrete sprayers, but aside from that we make everything else in house. Most popular with councils are steel frames with either a steel or skatelite riding surface, but my personal choice would always be for birch plywood as a riding surface. Strong as hell and grippy without burning your skin off when you crash.

I do a fair amount of backyard ramps too, and they tend to be all wood affairs (cheapest).

We're currently building ramps for Preston, Worthing and Brands Hatch.

Sadly, since writing that post my boss has said the the Worthing job has "gone quiet"..... Which is a tragedy as the ramp is made, sitting in our yard waiting for a start date.

It's only a minramp though, rather than a full park, so nowt to get massively excited about. Will be a great shame if it falls through at the 11th hour.

I'll find our where specifically it is due to go and I'll get back to you. Are you a skater/bmxer? We might need a local contact maybe.

Cheers

Rob.
