stevenbb4
My 03 280 pro has developed a problem finding second gear from neutral, when in neutral it will easily go into first and then second whilst moving but will not go in to second from neutral when stood sill. Once in second all other gears work fine, up and down the gear box no problems, it
jtt
Good chance it has to do with the shift drum positioning. With the bike shut off and in a quite place, put your ear right down by the shifter and slowly move it into 1st, then neutral, then second. You should hear a distinct "click" at each movement before the shifter runs out of travel.
bikespace
Remember the "With the bike shut off" bit, otherwise the bike quickly becomes further away and awkward to hear.
grouse
Hi been working on my mates 280 pro, he to has been having gear selection problems. When you adjust the cam and try to select gears should the gear fully engage each time? Or as seems to be happening in this case the gear only fully engages when you spin the wheel slightly. I dont want to put it back together until i know it is adjusted correctly.
jtt
Normally you'll hear the gear fully engage. Sometimes it's just a matter of the dogs not being aligned at a particular time. Try moving the wheel a little and trying it again.

gasgas
to join this gear selection prob topic. Mine won't go easily from 5 to 4 and from 3 to 2. Is this the same cullprit? Shifting up no problem. And to ask further. Is it correct that on the primaire assy there are only 4 gears? That is what the blueprints techdrawings are saying, imho. jtt
It is possible gasgas, although in most cases the drum adjustment will effect most of the gear range. On the primary shaft question, your stressing my poor little memory too much Can't remember off hand. If your in doubt, pop it apart. Super easy motor to work on and that little tranny is a lovely bit of work. Whole thing fits in the palm of your hand.
gasgas
Thanks Jtt, and before you ask, no i am not from canada, but amsterdam Maybe and other with a better memory can answer the primairy shaft question. Can not be that you are the only one who popped it apart only because you were curious. I just looked at the techdrawings and it seems that the prim shaft has 5 gears. The outgoing shaft has 6. On the shaft itself is always one gear machined so i forgot that one. But maybe someone still wants to common on that, as it is again very unconventional what they did.
