Hi all my name is stuart and i have been riding bikes since i was 5 im no stranger to super moto's, enduros and sports and naked road bikes but trial biking is completely new to me. After a nasty scare on my super moto a few months ago ( relating to the bike taking a horizontal lie down with me on it) i have decided to sell my much loved toy, and try and find another expensive, adrenaline filled, slightly slower way of fun to take up my free time and to meet some interesting people along the way. My bike will be for sale shortly after a few problems have been ironed out, so i will be on the hunt for a bike,,, what bike to get ?????????? im 6ft2 and average build. i was heavily into BMXing back in my teens so i still think i can throw a bike around a bit but not on the levels some of you boys mite be on,,,, i can hang on to a pokey bike but i dont need some thing uncontrolable,,,, like in the enduro world the ktm 525 is over kill but the 450's are good fun without sapping all your energy in the first 20 mins trying to keep you and the bike vertical. so all your help will be greatly received,,, im thinking maybe a gas gas or beta maybe 250???? what year's are best 2005 2004 ect?? i will probably have in the region of £1500 pounds to spend. Also i have been trying to locate a club in surrey or near to it to try and find info but im not really having much luck. I would like to come and see some of you guys in action, but as i said the info is hard to find.... CHEERS GUYS AND GALS........

Even the biggest trials bike will not be an animal.

In many ways, more engine is more forgiving.

It's not like MX, enduro, etc.

You'll also be glad to be in the totally unique position of riding a competition machine that is basically World Round ready right out of the box.

You'll also spend virtually no money on up-keep...especially when compared to MX and Enduro.

Literally ALL the bikes are good.

The best advice I could give is to look at parts availability and service.

If you have a good shop near you that sells/services one of the brands, go with it.

ok thanks for the tips,,, there is a dealer in farnham close to where i live that sells both beta and gas gas and i would imagine they stock parts and service equipment for them, it might be worth a look, Thanks.

Stuart,

Welcome! There are a few clubs around your / our area. My own club is RRND (Reigate Redhill North Downs) see our website - www,rrnd.co.uk This details whats On, where, Bikes for sale etc. We run a club trial each month - details on the website and an evening trial in the summer months - you just missed June's!

Our next club trial is at Hook Woods which is an awesome venue - but as its a club trial we dont do the mega sections there!!

As I mentioned there are several clubs in the area - Horsham Riders, Bognor, Thames, Worthing - to name a few and all hold events within an our of us (I live near Caterham). Google them for their websites or try the links from ours.

Bikewise I would say a 250 is probably about right - but don't discount the 200's - especially the Beta. Go more for condition than age - but come along to a trial and have a look and try a few. I have a Beta Evo but thats probably a bit expensive for you.

There are a few dealers nearby, all very good and reputable in my experience: Gordon Farley at Guildford, Merlin at Horsham (Mike Husband) or JAM at Farnham (Ian Allaway).

There is a trials practise facility near us - The Old Quarry at Betchworth. www.theoldquarry.co.uk They can hire you a bike and offer practise sessions. It is run by the Thomas family and their son Luke is a great rider and nice guy. They normally run practise sessions on Saturday or Sunday if there is no trial at their land. Give them a ring (and say that I sent you - might get a discount then!!)

Good luck and hopefully see you at a trial soon.

Eric

thanks Enrico for the info, i will pop down to one of the events soon to see how its all done and to get a better idea about the sport, i will take a look on the sites you have mentioned, Also J.A.M sport is relatively close to us in Farnham,,,, so i will pay them a visit this weekend. As you say condition primarily comes before model year. Is there any thing major that i should be aware of when purchasing a used trial bike do i need some sort of identification with it or is it just a sold as seen receipt..... Thank you for your helpful input, it has really inspired me even more........

Hi Leatherhead,

I was in a similar situation my self, i raced Supermoto since it's conception in england until 2005 when i gave up due to family life, also had a WR426 for green lanes and enduro as well as various sports bike. started trials again recently after 20years off a trials bike. I purchased a beta 250 (2008) and have since ridden a few club trials at Worthing (www.worthingtrialsclub.com) and Horsaham both well run clubs with friendly folk who are happy to help. I would strongly recommend the Beta they tend to be the lest problomatic of the bikes along with Scorpa, i am 6,5" and have no problems fitting on it although its all down to personal prefernace. I will be at Hook Woods tomorrow for some practice, you are welcome to come and have a quick go on the Beta as see what you think, my mate will be there on a scorpa and i am sure he will also oblidge.

Cheers

Danny

hi danny, i just popped down to hook woods, but you had left by then. It was around 6 o'clock, i had just finished work, when will you be around the area next time? i would like to take you up on your offer, and thank you for the offer,,,, Just a quick question, how did you gain access to hook woods? there seems to be a gate covered in barbed wire there? do they open this at certain times or do you need permision to access the site? Many thanks................... stu
