fergie
Trying to figure out why my 84 ty does not have spark. The manual says coil resistance is supposed to be 240 ohms +/- 10%. My problem is I am not sure how you are supposed to measure coil resistance. The coil on the bike (Aftermarket)has a small wire going into it and of course the high tension lead for the plug comming out of it. Are you supposed to measure it from the small wire to a ground source on the bike?
handsome_al
Hi fergie. Do you mean the 'source coil' of the CDI magneto? If so, the book says to disconnect the CDI magneto lead and measure across the BROWN + BLACK terminals in the connector. This should be 240 ohms +/- 10% as you mention. BUT .... you also mention the small (low tension) lead and the High Tension lead too, so this makes me think you mean the ignition coil! In which case the Primary coil is only 1.0 ohns +/- 15% and the Secondary coil is 5.9K ohms +/- 15% I'm no auto-electrician but the picture in the book appears to show measuring from each terminal to ground. Hope this helps. Edited June 18, 2011 by handsome_al
