old trials fanatic Posted September 13, 2011 Report Share Posted September 13, 2011 Well..... It's been about 2 1/2 months since I first posted this so it's time for an updated. When I first posted here I also sent a link to this thread to SMP so they could hear other peoples comments also. Richard from SMP contacted me and said they were in the process of making their tanks with a different method to work with the ethanol in fuel. They were not yet ready then but they would send me one to test in the USA when they were available. I received one a few days ago and it will be going on a bike that still has the oil injection working and will be tested with straight pump gas. Richard is very easy to deal with and said he had no problem with me experimenting with the tanks I already had while waiting on the new one. I rinsed the one with no sealer out with lacquer thinner and let it air out for a week. I then bought some Aviation Fuel LL100 (low lead 100 octane ) NO CORN. The carb got a full cleaning and a new filter installed. This fuel has now been in that tank at least a month and a half and has worked perfect, no residue, no pilot jet clogs, no problems at all. I'll be trying the new tank out on pump gas and will pass on the results. If you have an older tank as others have said probably the best thing to do is use AvGas if you can and avoid the ethanol. Corn is for eating not adding to fuel! Again Richard at SMP has been very helpful and concerned about keeping a customer happy. A refund was offered as well as the new tank. It's no fun to have a problem with a new part but it's good to know a vender will not leave you hanging. Dennis Nice to hear youre sorted. pat_56 Posted July 19, 2014 Report Share Posted July 19, 2014 In New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, PEI: all premium grade gasoline is ethanol free. Here is a site that lists sources of ethanol free gas pure-gas.org If you are near the Canadian border you could probably find a ready source. I am in New Brunswick so I use premium fuel in everything. Keeps me away from most ethanol, other than what still in the line from the last guy that pushed the regular button and I get a liter of that regular garbage which may be up to 10% ethanol. dpyam Posted July 23, 2014 Report Share Posted July 23, 2014 Ethanol in modern fuel is a disaster, particularly in older vehicles, lawnmowers, fibreglass tanks and anything with a carb. It causes carb'd engines to run weak as it has extra oxygen atoms compared to normal petrol so you should up jet size. I use Aspen fuel (Google it) in my trials bike and garden machinery. They went from leaded fuel to unleaded....and it is way more toxic, and now the bloody ethanol saga...what a fiasco. Sorry, but in my eyes it's all bull sh*t. A real shame beacause I liked the shape of it and the narrow/thin seat. The most disappointing thing is that it was signed by Mick himself after he rode it.I had it lacquered over to protect it - looks really good,shame I cant use it anymore. pat_56 Posted September 25, 2014 Report Share Posted September 25, 2014 The part I hate is that the last guy at the pump that used regular leaves a couple of liters in the hose of the regular garbage, and the next guy after me gets a couple liters of my good premium so I get "Some" ethanol and the next guy who don't give a care gets the good stuff. I am in the final stages of refreshing this bike and my TLR. This unit is at least 15 or 16 years old. It is absolutely top quality stuff. In my case it has never been subjected to any ethanol although the occasional beer may have been spilled on it. The difference is that it has lived most of its life in Mexico. Here all of the corn is converted into tortillas, and all of the petroleum comes out of the ground...courtesy of dead dinosaurs. It sounds like your problems have been solved courtesy of SMP. Cheers.
