prw
Whilst riding the youth trial at scarborough last weekend my sons 05 0.8 cut out twice, this was due to the plug fouling with black soot due to it running far to rich. Mixure screw was 3.5 turns out.Rathmells say this setting is about right,I can only get it to run cleanly about 2 turns out and it runs spot on with no pinking.I am wondering if it will be ok at this setting as rathmells said i should not go below 3 turns out,any advise would be appreciated,Thanks. alan bechard
Dean's is 2.5 turns out. I have never adjusted it, and I do not remember ever fouling a plug (8 months or so) I run Maxxima K2 at 64 to 1 with mixed 93 octane and 110. I am sure Rathmells knows better than I, but, I would run it where it runs well. Just be careful, kids sometimes do not realize when the bike is not right and will not tell you. Something I do find on Dean's and it never happens on ours and I am not sure why. When we put down the choke, the lever hangs on the edge of the cast metal guides where it is supposed to drop in too. Not sure if that makes sense or not, but if you play with the choke lever and pull it a bit off too the side, it should hang open just a bit, maybe 1/4 open. First couple times this happened it confused me as the bike was running "choked" and rich. I may be way off base, but I would watch for that. Dean told me on the way to the section that his bike was "not right", and you could hear it in the exhaust tone.
doughbouysherco
What fuel mix are you using ?
prw
Thanks for the replies. I am using castrol TTS @ 90ml per 5L OF Shell optimax.I also noticed that the choke can get caught on the guides and look out for this.I will run at 80ml of oil on sunday and maybe just take the screw out another half turn. Will post how it goes. doughbouysherco
We run 65/1 Castrol TTS on the 125 with no probs at all it Revs out nice & clean. A part from your fouling the plugs prob how do you find the 80, my younger son has just about outgrown his rev 50 & is pestering me for a shiny Sherco. The national lads seem to prefer the rev 80 because they are slightly lower but i think we'll give the Sherco a go.l
brian r
I don't know about your kid PRW, but Dean's bike never needs to be "cleaned out" when he gets to a section.
brian r
Smaller capacity bikes are quite happy on 80:1! You can of course use more oil, but generally all this is likely to achieve, is a silencer choked with unburnt oil, which will make bike run poorly, if not repacked quite often. Don't you think that the kids tend to rev the _____ out of the little bikes? Wouldn't they be better off mixed a little richer?

brian r
Yeah, I can even clean some of the same sections as him!
prw
Doughboy, i think the sherco engine is the best trials engine utilising the same bottom end as the larger capacity bikes. It is heavier than the Rev 80 so depends how big your lad is when upgrading. It is also higher geared than the beta so may need gearing down at first until he gains confidence on the bike. I think the Beta has been more popular with national riders as pre 2005 the sherco was a 99cc capacity machine so was not eligable for the 80 class.we are currently using the 99cc barrel in club trials but will use the 80 at the nationals we ride. All in all it seems a great bike with plenty of low down power similar to the TY engine, and suspension that works with the weight of riders it is designed for.It handles the sections in c class far better than our Gas Gas 80 did, sometimes the Gas Gas just did not have enough bottom end to pull higher gears when needed. The Beta engine seems to pull ok after comparing one with the Gas Gas.
