;) Hi All

I have just purchase a montesa cota 348 off fleebay and I was hoping that you guyz could help me out on a few things. Bearing in mind that this is my first trials bike purchase.

Questions I require help with are:

1. What is the correct ratio of 2 stroke oil to be used and what is the best make to use?

2. Do you have to premix the 2 stroke or is it seperate and pump fed?

3. Where are the engine and frame numbers on this motorcyle?

4. How much would it be to road register and how to go about it?

5. Where can I find a manual for the bike?

6. When I go to view the bike before handing over the cash is there any tips from you what to look out for?

7. Is there anyone who I could contact who would give me some advice about where to ride the bike legally and get involved with a local trials club in Gateshead.

8. What engine oil is best?

I cant believe I have just purchased this bike, I only hope it will serve me well. Maybe I should have purchased a modern bike but hey I just like the look of the old twin shock bikes and I couldnt resist bidding for this one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

regards

Chris

Brush up on your Spanish http://www.todotrial.com/ttclasico/manuales/manualesindice.htm

I bought 247 18 months ago on eBay and it's best thing I ever did - but be prepared to learn and to tinker. If you purchased on eBay you have few rights to reject unless the item was misrepresented in the description. It's an old bike so you need to expect the unexpected - I think I spent about $1,000 AUD bringing my 247 up to mechanically reliable status.

You have to premix your oil/fuel and it will be 4% or 25:1 fuel/oil mix. Have fun

1. What is the correct ratio of 2 stroke oil to be used and what is the best make to use?

Modern synthetics can be run down to about 70 to 1 but on a 348 I'd hang around 40 to 1.

2. Do you have to premix the 2 stroke or is it seperate and pump fed?

Tssk, philistine! No it's premix. There is no autolube pump

3. Where are the engine and frame numbers on this motorcyle?

They will start with 51M. This is confusing because the 349 model number was also 51M. Montesa model nums are a bit of a dark art.

4. How much would it be to road register and how to go about it?

??

5. Where can I find a manual for the bike?

Same question was asked in the Montesa forums a week or two back. Just do a search but Todotrial has a scanned copy.

6. When I go to view the bike before handing over the cash is there any tips from you what to look out for?

Err, not really. It's not a new(ish) bike so it's really up to you. All an inspection will do is give you an idea of how much you might need to spend depending on the standard to which you wish to restore it.

7. Is there anyone who I could contact who would give me some advice about where to ride the bike legally and get involved

with a local trials club in Gateshead.

WTF is Gateshead?

8. What engine oil is best?

ATF I think. Can't remember whether the Mon t has a sperate clutch and gearbox resevoir. If it's common use ATF.

Far too close to Ham2 for comfort.

There is excellent coverage of all upcoming events and results on Trials Central for the North East Centre.

Plenty of clubs for you to join, most have a £5 a year subscription fee, all are very friendly. Look up the contact details on the TC events calander and call the secretary or turn up at an event to join a club. You MUST have an ACU Competition License to enter any events in the North East, £10. Download the form from the ACU website and ask the secretary of your chosen club to stamp it and sign it.

Cheers for ya help fellas, going to view montesa on Wednesday. If its a lemmon am just walking away, hopefully it will be a canny bike as described in ebay listing. Another question is does this bike have matching engine and frame numbers. If there are no numbers on frame, where do I stand when making a cash on collection purchase through ebay. The last thing I want is bad feedback if I dont buy the montesa coz its not straight. I will try and get some pics on here soon, Cheers again for ya help.

No offence mate but it's people like you who bugger up eBay. If you bid more than you should - that's your problem - meanwhile you may have gazumped some guy who knows what he is about and had plans for the bike - don't buy without doing your homework - if you can't inspect the bike find someone who can or take your chances. If you pull out of the deal the seller has every right to bag you in feedback ... I would.
