sweersz Posted September 14, 2011 Report Share Posted September 14, 2011 Have any of you been in high rev situations while in gear as your bike is running out of gas? Any stories and/or crashes? When my bike runs out of gas, it revs like crazy for about 20 seconds (it's horrible for everything, now I know that it sucks up more gas than I thought it did). Is it possible that I have an air leak since the revs last this long? What has been your experience(s) regarding lean fuel conditions? feetupfun Posted September 14, 2011 Report Share Posted September 14, 2011 The runaway revving thing as the fuel level in the float bowl goes low can be due to the lean mixture causing detonation instead of the controlled burning that normally happens. It can also be due to the idle mixture being too rich, then becoming correct mixture as the fuel level goes low. No it can't be due to a vacuum leak, because it would do it all the time that the motor was at normal operating temperature, not just when it was running out of fuel. billyt Posted September 14, 2011 Report Share Posted September 14, 2011 (edited) When your bike gets to the point of empty it goes lean and atomizes the fuel greater than the 14:1 ratio that is normal, causing a VERY lean mixture thus making the engine run away! joostio Posted September 17, 2011 Report Share Posted September 17, 2011 I can hear my engine start to ping before it stalls out usually. Mine revs up before it dies too.
