james111089
Could it be moisture now you have sealed it so well ? James

jjwhite
what we have done befre with our gassers is to put a little bit af sponge in the bottom of the air box, where the drainage hole it, this stops the majoritoty of the water and mud etc. getting in, and still lets any water already in it drain away. i know a person who rode the whole of the ssdt without needing to clean his air filter because of this little bit of sponge. it should come as standard!!! scorpaf
It depends on just how well you have sealed the air box to the seat, they do not do a good job at the factory. Take the airbox off the seat unit, its held on by 6 torx screws, scrape off the sealer put on at the factory - you should notice the sealer is nowhere near the gap its supposed to be sealing, this is because its been put on after assembly. Get some PU Seam Sealer (available at motor factors - used for sticking car body parts, spoilers etc) and apply some right around the joint, put the airbox back onto the seat unit and put the torx screws back in. Leave it overnight and trim off any excess with a knife. This is the biggest source of water ingress into the airbox so putting it right will keep most of the water out. A drain hole is still a good idea though with either the sponge method or a flexible plastic / rubber petal type flap under the drain hole to let water out but not in. oceanvibe
Thanks for the help, the sponge trick seems a good way to go so wil try that along with taking the box right off and starting again. Fingers crossed it will all go well.
subira
I made up the crude non-return valve/flap fitted to the later bikes for my '03. Used a bit of plastic milk container, a strip of alloy and two self tappers. Seems to do the job of keeping the water, from coming in the drain hole, and draining out if it gets in. (Tested in the sink OK) If you look at the parts book you should be able to see the way it works, rode a very wet trial on Friday and the filter was dry at the end of the trial. mintsauce
sounds like a brilliant idea the sponge you put in the bottom of the air box how big/thick should i use and did you stick it down?

the artist formerly known as ish
What stops the bit of sponge getting sucked through the motor ?
the artist formerly known as ish
I don't know how the GG air box is set up, on most bikes I have seen you have intake air, filter and then the volume of the airbox with a drain on the carb side of the filter. The filter on a Pro is fixed to the carb inlet so all water in the box has not gone through the filter.
