sweersz
Hey guys! I still can't figure this out. I have an old Beta. My clutch cover gasket kind of got messed up so it leaks oil like a sieve. I already have a new gasket but I can't seem to figure out how to take the clutch cover off. I take all of the bolts out as well as the big one that connects the frame and the clutch cover still won't budge. Am I missing something? Do I take the clutch arm off too? How about the dowels on the kick starter and shifter? Do they come out too? Please someone school me on this, I am lost. It seems like the cover is held up on the bottom right and yes, I'm sure all of the primary bolts are out. Also, here is a picture. What does the bolt (#3) do on top? Does that go off or no? Should I take off #1 too? Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!
pindie
If your sure all the bolts are out have you tried light taps on the case to break the seal? A soft (rubber or hide) mallet is what you need. Tap the case 90 degrees to the way it goes on.
pindie
You will also need to remove the kick arm and gear lever.
monty348
Bolt #3 is a retainer for the kickstart mechanism. There's no need to remove it to take off the clutch cover. I removed the cover from my TR34C two days ago. After the perimeter bolts are removed tapping on the case broke the seal and the cover was easy to remove. lineaway
Lower your skid pan, remove 4 and 5. remove all the allen bolts. The case sticking on the lower right should just be the shift shaft. Just slowly work it all loose. Never remove #3 unless working on the kick stater. monty348
Here's a thought for what it's worth. Considering the age of your machine and the poor condition you describe you may want to replace the crankshaft seal while you have the cover removed. It's certainly more work than just gasket replacement and involves clutch and primary gear removal. Stator side crankshaft seal might be bad too which could cause poor running. sweersz
The case sticking on the lower right should just be the shift shaft. Just slowly work it all loose. You are correct, this is my problem. I got the cover to slide through the kick start shaft but the shifter shaft is still stuck on the cover. After much WD-40 and tapping, it is still not budging. Am I totally screwed? I don't know what to do at this point. Thank you all for your input. Monty, I'll definitely look into that... at this point I can't take the cover off though. Hopefully I don't have to use only silicone as a gasket. Thanks! Edited October 7, 2011 by sweersz
monty348
Here's a thought on the stuck cover. Could you pry or cut out the shaft seal. There may be some foreign object (dirt/rust/crud) that is binding the shaft in the bushing. Small oils seals are not very expensive.
