nedrapier
Nearly new as in not yet new, rather than new a little while ago! Very keen, but I don't know a lot, and I've got couple of hurdles to overcome. I've always liked the idea of trials, particularly the long distance stuff. I've had a couple of crappy little road bikes before, been on a MX day, and been mountain biking for years, so hopefully I'll have some transferable skills, and a bit of muscle and fitness in some of the right places! Local-ish club would be Berko trials, unless anyone can recommend others within a sensible drive of North London? There is one main thing in the way: I live in a 1st/2nd story terraced flat. Had a couple of people say if I'm leaving a bike out the front, I may as well just leave the cash in a plastic bag on the gatepost. I didn't think there'd be much difference between leaving a scooter there and a trials bike. Are trials bikes incredibly nickable, due to not needing road registration, MOT, tax checks etc? Thinking about a tarp and a big chain with anchors in a couple of buckets of concrete. What about insurance? Do you stick it on the house insurance if you don't take it on road? Are there specialist insurers/brokers? And the bike! Preconceptions/facts/lies/hints/tips I've picked up so far are that Betas Evos are great but not as reliable as Scorpas. Montesa 315r is a good all rounder, great honda engine. Smaller bikes are just as capable as bigger bikes, more satisfying to ride and they require a bit more finesse, and so good to start on. No point getting a twin shock to learn on as a decent one'll cost as much as a decent monoshock, but won't go, stop or turn as well! ??? I don't fancy chopping and changing, I'm hoping this is going to be a cheap hobby, I want something that'll do long distance stuff as well so I'm looking for a 200 as a middle ground. As far as manufacturers go, I guess people are riding and enjoying all sorts and having fun, so as long I stick to a mono shock in good nick, I probably won't go too far wrong, even if it's a 175/250 rather than a 200? Ride it up the steps and park it in the kitchen!

nedrapier
Why are they so nickable? And given how many hands a 10 year old bike might have gone through, how sure can you be that something on Ebay won't have been nicked at some point? cabby
Why are they so nickable? No keys, no steering lock, kick and away

billyt
I've always liked the idea of trials, particularly the long distance stuff. I am still dazed at the "long Distance" part! This guy is pulling our chains!
nedrapier
Erm? What's odd about that? I've always loved big days out n the mountain bike, thought a bit of distance and scenery would be a great element to this lark. Plus I'm a bit off a glutton for punishment! All a bit academic unless I can find somewhere to keep a bike! Edited October 14, 2011 by nedrapier

jakeblues68
Perhaps you are thinking of green lanes rather than trials?
