Setting Sag ?

OK the black art of setting suspension is driving me crazy.

One thing in particular, setting rear sag :wall:

I know how to take the measurements, I know static sag, rider(race sag) etc etc, but how do I know what is the correct sag ??

Yes I've searched on here, and almost always find it should be 1/3 of the travel, but how do I find out what the travel is ????

For example here are measurements I have taken.

Bike on stand - 625mm

Bike sitting settled on ground = 600mm

Bike with my fat ass on it in gear = 520mm

Where does this 1/3 come from and how do I find it :wall:

What figure should I be looking to achieve for rider sag ???

Try Here for how http://www.Gas Gas.com/Pages/Technical/trials-suspension-tips.html

Then check the spec sheet for your make and model of bike, look for rear wheel travel work out 1/3 of this figure.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, but it's finding out what the travel on my bike is part of the issue. They say one third of the travel, but how do you find out that if you can't find out what the travel is ???

175mm, finally found out what the travel is. So I assume I need one third of 175mm for my rider sag....is that correct ??

Don't suppose anyone knows what the gas gas rear travel is while I'm at it

None of this makes any real difference unless you are possibly wanting to install a heavier spring for your weight if you are indeed heavy!

You need static sag in the system(weight of bike on wheels) of between around 10-30mm so things kinda float a bit. You measured 25mm, so you could take that up a bit. Yet it is not good to overwind the spring with preload just to achieve race sag(weight with rider).

I know plenty of good riders on stock springs, and they are not 10.5 stone spanish youth!

Speak to Chris at Splatshop. He knows how to do it as he gave me a lesson yesterday.

I'm awaiting them getting stiffer springs in, been a while...

My race sag is out by 40 mm, I need a stiffer spring.

Errrr nope. You are wrong. You are writing off a whole setup area - why?

Both race and static sag are very important for best suspension set up.

Stock springs are fine when they have been chosen well by the factory and you fall within the range the factory expects to get onto the bike.

Example of a complete brain fart was the 09 & 10 Beta - you had to be a 65kg rider to get best or buy a heavier spring (and loads did)

So have you tried setting the spring tension to get 1/3 sag with your riding gear on.... and did you get a friend to help with the measurements (it is not possible to do it by your self)?

Got static sag at around 17mm, race sag is still near 100mm with the spring wound pretty much all the way to the end of the thread. I believe it needs to be around 58-60 mm so I have to assume I need a stiffer spring.....correct ???

Not writing off anything here. Point being, if you do not have a spring(which he does not) lesser of two evils is to just take it up a bit closer to zero static and do not overwind it based upon your weight!

One may have springs custom made, all good at a cost! Just how much that will improve the average Joe is another thing.

58-60 sounds correct.

So you have compressed (check this) the spring all the way!!!!!!!...... wow. Well done you may be the first (really). I'd expect the bike to thump up to the top of it's travel and have no static sag at all. Hummm check the spring isn't broken.
