neils on wheels
The question has been posed many times about how many titles Toni Bou may win or indeed who may beat him. This raises a broader of issue of how riders are developed through the Youth and Junior ranks up to WTC level. The top 5 riders have not changed in many years, with only Doug's decline from 1st to 6th changing the consititution of the top five. What is notable is that the five World Youth Champions, all who have been crowned since 2005, currently riding WTC (Challenor, Wigg, Gubian, Brown & Dabill) with Ferrer having joined them in the last round, have not made an impression on the top five. This stagnation of the top 5 & lack of progress from Youth to World level suggests that this is not the route to develop the very highest level of achievement. Maybe if riders want to break into the top five they need to progress more quickly through the Youth & Junior ranks. What do others think, would this see more variety at the top of the WTC? breagh
While I believe you can help rides attain a certain level very few have that something special. Only a few times in a generation do exceptional riders come along. I would suggest that the best way of increasing the chances of getting these riders is to broaden the sport at grassroots. nigel dabster
Think you missed gibert and gomez and oliveras off your list, although along with dabill think you might mean junior rather than youth. Good points, and whilst Alexz progressed pretty much as quick as anyone could, the lack of support of the ACU and FiM meant he wasted a year in the juniors struggling on a 125cc whereas pol tarres was immediately given dispensation to ride a bigger bike which is essential in the bigger junior sections. all by the way. Pol Tarres has been fast through the ranks, but hasnt been a match for ferrer and at times Moret who have been plugging away in juniors for a few years. I think in 2005 our lads would have done better, but as bou and the rest have got better the sections have definately got harder year on year, and the gap between the bottom of the top route, the champions you mentioned above mainly, are struggling to keep improving faster than the section severity is increasing. no stop would help here....................
