dixie
Been riding Fantic T/S' for ages, and have a TY 250 mono that seems to work just like a modern bike, so imagine my supprise when I got a really nice majesty 250, wich seems as flat as a pancake, spoke to a few Yam boys, and was imformed they are all like that?? well are they?? Dont get me wrong , it seems to climb anything, but you have to hang on and wait, not confidence inspiring. How does yours go????
andy m
I'm sure someone will be along to give advice soon but they have a flywheel weight that some remove, that will help.
jon v8
Most riders "think" they need instant mega power - in truth if you learn to trust that it will do the same thing each time you open the throttle, you will realise it will do anything you want.Leave the clutch alone and concentrate on steering it - you will become a much better, smoother rider.Twinshock trials should be laid out without monster steps/climbs etc - they are for modern bikes.
twinshocktosser
Depends what you are comparing it to. A fully modded 250 is about as good as a worn out mono! But as a Jon says they will clean sections nicely. It will never be a torque monster in 250 form.
guy53
I'm not a specialist, but every time I can, I have a test ride on any trial bike, and my TY B and I have in mind a couple of A and D just work fine, not at par with a good SWM 350 but beter than any 250 that as not been cared for. Good clean well tune carb, CLEAN exhaust ( very important ) replace the head gasket by a thinner one ( .005 to .010 ) good piston and a sprocket combination that suit your riding style. Voila... a respectable TS. Yes you have to set up the suspension! As Andy wrote I took the flywhell weight off on my B but this winter I will put it back on ( maybe a little lighter than the one on 434 model ). But Dixie your not the first one with that impression, if you dig a bit you will find more than one thread asking your question and getiing more advise than I write in this reply. mattylad
The early Majestys were delivered with a much heavier flywheel as standard, not sure if this was the case for the very late ones. This solution was aimed at the 320 but also fitted to the 250. If the bike you tested still had this fitted it would certainly feel as flat as a pancake! The optimum solution (in my opinion) is to use a lightened standard if you are looking for a modern response.
metisse
I had a 320 Majesty and tried everything to make it run right . In then end it was sold and I bought what I should have done in the first place ... a Fantic... Very disappointed as I really like the Majesty but I think in 250 form it may be the better bet.. dixie
Its not so much "modern power" I was hoping for, Just a bit more feel, It will pull second in a stiff section no probs, but allways "feels" like it is just starting to Bog. The bike is very well set up, but still soft, almost too soft. In first just feeling for grip its fine untill you want to give it a hand full, and it feels like a slight delay. But hey ho a change is as good as a rest...
twinshocktosser
Dixie, I have the same symptoms of a delay, I think the next mod is the flywheel weight. I have tried removing the ring completely but made it too snappy. I will remove a few grams and see how it goes.
dixie
Think I will just ride it more, I dont want to upset the grip finding abilitys, I Just put a brand new tyre on, that always makes a bike feel better.. like I said, its not that I am un happy with the power it just feels very different, Sometimes people who have ridden a model for a long time can put your mind at rest. The general handling is fantastic, Time will tell.
andy m
Just read in a mag re a well sorted TY, they reduced the outer steel band on the flywheel from 140 down to 129mm. That will give it more get up and go with decent tyres fitted etc. You could do with a spare flywheel to try just in case it's not for you. But hey ho a change is as good as a rest... There is something wrong with your bike, probably a worn carb making it go lean when you whack the throttle open. Its never going to be a 300 Fantic,(246cc)but then most people found them too much and prefered the 212cc engine in the 240.Despite what people are saying about removing or trimming the flywheel weight,I removed mine and had problems with stalling it.Made even worse when I started using my HT on a regular basis -which is ridden just on the throttle.I ended up putting the weight back on and now can rely on a dependable motor that will really lug down low and give grip where most others - including modern bikes, really struggle. andy m
On this piece of film with Mick Andrews you can see how lazy the motor seems but it does everything he wants it to do....
dixie
Andy M, that piece of film made me feel much more happy about the pick up, you can clearly hear my issue, the motor sort of buurrrppps into life, If majical Mick is happy, best I get used to it.. Good tips jon, but as I said the bike has been Very Well put together, with lots on new old stock, and a brand new mikuni carb, Think its me being picky. dixie
Oh and it was 212's that I used (Fantic wise) as the 250 motor was to sharp for my liking, just a picky old git I suppose. No pleasing some people
