copemech Posted November 27, 2012 Report Share Posted November 27, 2012 I have had the carbs that the jets turned green as you state, and I can only suppose part of this is bue to the brass tarnishing, but the things also seemed to develop a scum layer that required a soaking in the carby spray and a lot of poking with the wire to get the scum layer off as it was just as thick on the inside of the jet orface as outside. My little tool is a fine wire off an old brush and it is slightly rusted and abraisive, so as to knock off some crud in the process, but you gotta be gentile yet! The carby spray, or possibly something like the wifeys Acetone nail polish remover may help break this dorn chemically! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not convinced it shifted everything, the crud was real hard and stuck like the proverbial! Going to fit a new one and see if that works! I stripped my 290 down a while back and after a hyper-short time of perfect running, my bike started to ehxibit the same idle problems as yours. After checking and rechecking everything else...only a new stator coil cured it. I can't explain it so I won't, I hope for your sake it's something cheaper in this case . Having pulled the plug and it was dry I back tracked and realised my error to much haste when I fitted the new idle jet. Back on track now! firecat Posted December 1, 2012 Author Report Share Posted December 1, 2012 Yes it runs, rebuilding was worth it but hats off to Chris for suggesting I do a pressure leak down test. The engine was running but not particularly well (although better than before the rebuild). The test showed a big leak around where the reed block enters the crank cases. I had used new gaskets throughout so not too impressed with the machining on the cases. I stripped, re cleaned and reseated finally resorting to RTV gasket applied to all the joint faces to get a seal which would hold pressure. I am going to check again having left it overnight. Some thoughts...... I was amazed the bike would run with such an air leak. I have only ever used new gaskets and correct torque values and assumed these along with scrupulously clean components would guarantee a seal. It does not - maybe it is a Sherco thing? I will do the test on all future rebuilds just to be sure. The bike would not idle with the old "unblocked" pilot jet, despite my best endeavours to clear it. a new jet was required to sorted it. The pilot jet hole is tiny - way less than 0.5mm even using a micr drill (last resort) I could not shift the blockage (corrosion build up) caused by storing with fuel in the carb. Do not leave modern "fuel" in your carb for extended periods of time, it is highly corrosive and will cost you lots in replacement jets. I used to think switching the fuel off and leaving the engine running until it drained the carb was good enough. The moral of the story is clear, ride your bike do not store it! It is cheaper and more fun! Finally, a very big thank you to Chris at Splat shop, he is a genuinely helpful guy who goes out of his way to help, infinitely more than good customer service would dictate. The only things I am not too happy with are selecting 4th gear now has a distinct clunk that I do not recall and having cleared all the adhesive on the clutch plates I now have a very noisy clutch. Lovely and quiet when the lever is pulled in but is real noisy when it is not, smooth and lovely but more noisy than I recall! All the best!
