dragstar
Hi guys, my daughter rides a 290, 2001, first bike. Her first trial is the end of March so she has been training hard. The bike has been running fine but yesterday there was a slight lack of power and it was cutting out for no reason, it also got hot and the silencer was so hot that it melted the petrol pipe Checked the wiring, red wire from stator was not great at the terminal so put that right. started ok from cool, fan cut in after about 10 minutes steady riding but after half an hour it became really hot again. Packed up and went home very disappointed. Started to strip the bike down, Piston fine, rings fine, head fine. rad full, rad fins not blocked with mud, 'Stat operates at just below boiling (in a pan of water). Red and green wires from stator read just over 500 on the multi meter, (think its on the right resistance setting). Spark jumps around a bit at the plug tip, but there is a spark ! Pump impeller is turning but have not checked it further. Any help would be fantastic, thank you. ps, running at 70 to 1, plug black. copemech
You would want to disconnect the kill button for testing and also insure the earth point for the coil/cdi is good, but it sounds as though the ignition timing is going off to a retarded position or is set incorrectly. If it has just gone"off" the keyway on the flywheel may have sheared, or there are other possibilities such as a daft CDI unit and the next thing would be the daft stator plate with a bad trigger. No good way to test those other than trial and error and not sure where you are located, but if UK, I think Splatshop may have exchange stator and CDI new you can get and return the unused bits if need be. So get a flywheel puller and let us know how you get on, hope that helps! MC
