peterschnecke Posted July 4, 2013 Report Share Posted July 4, 2013 Hello, I use my 01' Rev3 250 mainly on enduro style trails and to get to the trail I often ride a few(10-20) kilometers on public roads and I would like to have the engine a bit cooler. It is not that the bike overheats, no steam is coming out of the cap and I also don't loose any coolant, but on the other hand I never give full throttle on the paved roads and only drive about 50kp/h (30mp/h) max. because I fear that the bike gets to hot. I already replaced the 12V regulator and the fan now runs a bit faster. The coolant I use is Motul Motocool Factory Line and I also plan to exchange the plastic radiator guard with alloy mesh for more airflow. The oil I use is Motul 710 2T But still, I would like to have my bike run even cooler. Does anybody have experiences with bigger Waterpump Kits for increased water flow? Jitsie Waterpump Kit Are there any other Waterpump Kits? Here I read about a "Costa high volume water-pump kit"? Is there anything else I should check to get the bike run cooler? totalshell Posted July 4, 2013 Report Share Posted July 4, 2013 couple of things.. without spending a ton of cash.. dump the water and run anti freeze at the minimum dilution the boiling point will rise .. second run ssdt sprockets as recomended by beta uk for road running. Have you measured the temperature, does the fan cycle on and off as it should? Cooler is not always better, you might be trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. The radiator had about 90°C (194°F) and the engine felt really hot after riding. I would like to have temperatures of around 75°C (167°F) That would be the same/a bit more than the optimal engine temperature of an Aprilia RS125 2T. Are this realistic temperatures for a trial bike? Also the plastic silencer protector already started to smoke some times, but than again the protector is a bit broken because it has direct contact with the silencer so that might not be an indicator. I am not so sure about using water and anti freeze because the Motul Motocool already has a boiling temperature of 136°C (277°C) and I wont have problems with a corroding water pump. totty79 Posted July 4, 2013 Report Share Posted July 4, 2013 Optimum 2 stroke temps seem to be mostly quoted for maximum performance. I really don't know enough to offer advice here so I'll only say that I wouldn't be concerned by 90°C with no other symptoms. The usual indicator of blowing coolant probably can't be relied upon with your high boiling point coolant. The next indicator can be detonation. Changing the radiator guard sounds like the easiest way to reduce the temp. You can measure radiator inlet and outlet temps to see how effective this is. But sill, my question according to experiences with the waterpump kits remains. I also did a bit of math and now i know that with original gearing the Beta will run about 100kp/h (60mp/h) with 7000rp/m in 6th gear.(Already tested that one time on the autobahn, but it is a bit scary to go 60mph on a trialsbike while standing ) While riding normally on the street [50kp/h (30mp/h) ] the Beta runs with about 3500rp/m in 6th gear. This is about half of the rated speed. Now the question is how efficient the normal waterpump is at that rather "low" (?) rp/m. The bigger waterpump might make a difference or the radiator is already not capable of the heat and a bigger waterpump wont change anything.mhh... dadof2 Posted July 5, 2013 Report Share Posted July 5, 2013 If you really need extra cooling an extra radiator where your front number plate goes. Alternatively have a larger (thicker) radiator made to fit in the standard position. Just an extra loop of copper pipe where it catches the airflow can make a difference. copemech Posted July 6, 2013 Report Share Posted July 6, 2013 Not sure the operating environments here, yet there are limiting factors involved, more specifically, if one rushes the water through a rad at too high of speed(rate), it has no time to actually cool! So operating at consistant high flow(high rpm) rates may actually be the cause of an overheat due to the radiators limited capacity to disburse it! Physics, go figure! Old waterpump and plastic radiator cover was about 90°C (194°F) while doing 50kp/h (30mph) Old waterpump and aluminum mesh was about 85C° (185°F) while doing 50kp/h (30mph) Jitsie waterpump and aluminum mesh is about 75°C (165°F) while doing 65kp/h (40mph) Better than expected. It seems that the original plastic impeller has scratched on the waterpump housing and cover. I have no Idea how that happened. But anyway, the new impeller does not scratch and seems to develop a bigger pressure even while idling and keeps the engine a lot cooler.
