Tyz 250 Project

Recently rescued the bike from a carport in Tecate, co worker gave it to me. After a thorough washing discovered a rat had ate the filter and lived in the air box for awhile luckily nothing got past the carb. I believe it's a '93 no vin # on eng jus a mdl # on frame so far the insides look good so still waiting for gaskets and have completely stripped from top to bottom. My local Yamaha dealer had never heard of one so parts from them was a nogo. Does anyone still sell the footrest lowering kits? I've read about them. If anyone has any info I would love the help. Thomas

Footpeg lowering kit? That would be pretty interesting on one of those bikes. The footpegs are already as low as the bashplate. I rode one of these (first model TY250Z) for a few years in the late 1990s and could not come to a happy agreement with some aspects of the design.

What caused me grief was the very limited steering lock, and the long wheelbase. It made for a very big turning circle which might be fine if you like hopping the bike in turns, but I don't.

I've read all the same things about them, I just could't let it lanquish. I desert raced a '92 YZ 250 so I'm also replacing the pink with Yammie white. I work in a manufacturing co. so a little work to change the steering lock shouldn't be a problem. If I get this up and running it will keep my two boy's off my Sherpa.

Nice freebie ! I've never had a TYZ,but I think they had a fairly good reputation back in the day after all the successes of the twinshock TY and the TY250R/ S air cooled mono's. I cant see why any Yam main dealer shouldn't be able to supply whatever new parts are still available,it may be worth going back and asking them to do their job and find out for your,esp if you have a decent list of parts you need.

I'm interested to see how you get a significant increase the steering lock. On most of the TY250Zs I've seen the owners have increased the steering lock by grinding the frame away where the fork tubes touch. This provides a modest improvement, but is still way less lock than what is on the air-cooled mono Yamahas.

I'm sure you will enjoy riding the bike, the suspension action is well ahead of what the other bikes of the early 1990s had, the main frame cradle is amazingly rigid and robust, the big diameter forks tubes resist flex very well and the motor and gearbox are pure bliss to use. They are great to ride in everything except extremely tight stuff

Updates, bikes all done until I can afford to pick up a new rear mudguard, went to 6.0 Renthals to get better ergos from it. Started right away, pulled some oil from the front forks the 95mm from the top of tube numbers I found in the forums here was way too much oil. I still would like for some one with an actual service manual to let me know the right amount. Wanted to say thanks for all insight and parts leads I received from T.C. members.
