Air Filter And Engine Oil

I have managed to clean my carb, change the plug with out any problems but now I want to clean the air filter and I don't know how to get to it and also I want to change the engine oil but don't really know what oil to buy, any tips would be great, the bike is a Sherco 250 1999-2000.

thanks , yes it's a two stroke, i forgot to ask the best way to clean my air filter, i have looked on the internet and you can buy two spray cans, one is a cleaner and the other is air filter oil, is that the way to go or is their a better way.

God forbid anyone use naptha or stoddard solvent paint thinner. Keep a bucket sealed to reuse. There are limits to the cleaning of these filters and if yours is in poor condition, get a couple cheap ones for a tenner at Splatshop to royate out as you ALLWAYS need to pull and inspect them PRIOR to washing the bike and plug the bung so no water gets in, then wash away!

i have ordered some filter oil from off the internet, i'm getting my engine oil from a bike shop in town today and i will probably know what you mean copemech when i actually get my air filter off, i think i have to take the back mudguard off, to get at it, which looks like one 6mm bolt and a cable tie so i'l let you know how i get on.

I'v just gone to go out on my bike for an hour and the wind nearly knocked me of my feet so i decided to have a better look at my air filter and oil change instead, the air filer is very easy to get to, just an allen key, i don't even have to cut the cable tie, just take the bolt out and lift the rear mudguard over to the right and it's there, nothing hard and fast, the air box comes off with one size socket and a screw driver so i can clean it better, i now know where to put the engine oil in but i'm not sure which bolt to take off to drain the oil, it's on the left hand side on the newer bikes but i couldn't see it when i looked, i will have another look, i'l find before it goes dark.

Drain screw is the lowest case screw below & slightly in front of the sprocket, has been the same on all shercos I've owned including a 99.

When you take the airbox off for cleaning leave the connector on the carb as it's much easier to slide the airbox into it than try & get it back onto the carb properly

I have good memories of my 99 bike, not the most powerful available at the time & heaps lighter than the gas gas jt35 I sold to get it

Strong solvents can hurt the filter and the glue that holds it together.

Here in the colonies we have a dish wash liquid (fairy bubbles! I LOVE THAT!!!), called DAWN that is well known for its degreasing properties. Weekend Rockabillies even use it to get the grease out of their hair before heading off to work Monday morning.

For oil...in a pinch you can use motor oil, as we all did, but foam filter oil is best because it doesn't run to the bottom.

Sherco calls for 5w30 for engine oil and I've always used it with fine results, and it's inexpensive.

Also...anytime I've removed a clutch where the friction material has become unglued from the plates, there has been red stuff (ATF) in the engine.
