lineaway
Yes, the early box was steel. I do like Jon`s idea of brake fluid as an alternative. But a torch will burn all deposits away. Dangerous and messy yes, but so is most methods.

wobblenorbed
Just because a magnet sticks doesn`t mean that something is steel, it could be aluminium with steel inards. You have been warned. Good luck.
chris west
The exhaust has been soaking for two days . Weird ice like crystals developing in pipe . Carbon loosening .
dadof2
Probably the best way to clean out an exhaust is to plug the end and fill it with methylene chloride (about 3£ per litre). Shake it once in a while or leave it overnight. Pour it oil and if you keep it in a tin (not plastic) container it can be reused several times. If the methylene chloride does not shift really hard burned on deposits in the front pipe near the barrel try spray on foaming oven cleaner, leave it to work then part fill the pipe with chippings, plug the ends and shake it. thats_a_five
Please be careful when using chemicals like methylene chloride and such. There are known hazards to skin, respiratory, and nervous system functions from incorrect contact. Google it and read the information about proper handling and disposal.
cc181
Along the same lines of this thread I have an 04 GG 300 with the seperate silencer and mid-box. The carburation/mix ratio seams to leave the exhaust a little messy and I would like to clean it up some. The question I have is what is inside the mid-box. When I look inside I can see what looks like a baffle, some perferated material all through the box. Does this have any packing material in it or is it just empty behind it. I am leary of putting some kind of solvent in there to clean it if the is some kind of packing in there. My local dealer wasn't much help with the info. Thanks for any input. dadof2
Yes methylene chloride is rather nasty stuff, but caustic soda is none too pleasant either. I get mine from Smith and Allan and the safety data sheet is on their website. Metylene chloride will not harm metals or other exhaust packing materials, It WILL rapidly wreck rubber, plastics and paintwork.
