cabby
While out the other day a couple of guys who are a hundred times better riders than me had a shot of my bike and both of them remarked on how flat/slow a pick up it had then just fired up. Something that I have thought for a long time but just thought it was my rubbish control, anyway, what can I do to resolve this issue ? 2012 250 on standard gearing and everything else as it was the day it was new ? copemech
A 250 is hard to find here, and I got a "12 250 because I prefer it over my 2.9 prior, less aggressive and easier to ride, good for us punters, maybe not for better riders, yet I like mine just fine. I have not messed about with the ignition timing on this bike, yet It seems set docile, one might advance it a bit for more aggressive power, go slow, a mm or two on the plate rotation, prolly no more than 3-4mm max. as you may then get into the kickback and easy stalling range. cabby
So is there nothing much more i can do than than to improve things ? Adjusting the idle wasnt great. I was wondering if changing the gearing or pilot would make a difference ? Both of which are simple enough to do with my lack of technical skill. lewis cosgrove
Have the idle step up so that you can creep the bike forward slipping the clutch without throttle. Whats jets are in at the moment?
cabby
Whats jets are in at the moment? With whatever the carb came with/
lineaway
Clean the carb, it is possible to have a partially plugged pilot or main jet. Also you can over oil an air filter with the same results.
copemech
Well, now that you mention it, if you have no idea where the jetting is currently, it would be a good start! My "07 2.9 came with a #30 pilot that was soo lean it would not lift the front wheel! With the stock Dellorto, I figure you should be at a 36/ 118(120) on the pilot/main jets, with the main being a bit less critical. And since it seems you have not done it, you now get to learn to fight getting the intake pipe and adapter all fit nicely back in place on the carb, what a joy! Good luck! cabby
Oh believe me, I've had the joy of getting the intake pipe back on the carb a number of times.
tony27
Don't take it off the carb then, much easier to get on & off the airbox Pretty sure when I still had the dellorto fitted to my bike the jetting was very close if not the same as Copemech has provided

steve_earle
As others have covered here, Make sure carb is clean and the needle is on the right clip position and installed correctly, Check ignition timing. Normally a bike that is weak off the bottom then takes off is a sign of a lean condition. Could also be an air leak, This would make the revs slower to drop down to idle and make the bike slow to initially pick up from idle then of sort of make the bike want to run away when reved. Have you ridden another 250 to compare it with? Does yours have a flywheel weight?, Could be that your mates are used to a bigger engined bike. nigel dabster
Think it should be 33 pilot? Speak to Jacko at AG BIkes he should know whats best. Where are you dbf it would help if its on your profile!
cabby
Ok quick update. I have readjusted the fuel screw to give me more fuel, i.e. just over 3 out rather than the 2.5 it was. I have adjusted the idle accordingly, however, I haven't ridden it in a trial yet (since I have adjusted it that is) so it may well have been running lean. The bike is completely standard from new, nothing has been done to flywheels, jets. As for where I am, Dundee, Scotland, and yes, the couple guys who rode it the other day, do ride bigger capacity bikes, bith have 280 scorpas, but I don't hold it against them. lewis cosgrove
On the Sherco website it says the 2012 250's come with a 33 pilot, i would turn the fuel screw to 3.5 on 33. Just take the carb off and check, plus give it a clean while your at it.
