trialtrial
I am just installing the updated shifter drum and new shift assembly into my 2012 - this will allow for easy finding of neutral and a little bit more strength in shifting. My question is about drilling an oil transfer hole. In the attached picture I mark two areas that are at the lowest portion of the tranny plate. Should I drill at A or B? What size hole? Oh, and should I use any thread locker on the tranny bolts? I used blue locktite last time and I nearly stripped a couple of them getting them out this time. (Torx T10 - sheesh - give me a break?!?!?) thanks Edited January 24, 2014 by trialtrial
lineaway
Is it a reflection or are the gears damaged?
trialtrial
nope - gears are fine.
trialtrial
I just committed - I drilled a 3mm hole at "A". Cross fingers and toes PeterB says this is OK. I'd still like to hear any feedback on those silly tranny bolts though.
wayne509
Oh, and should I use any thread locker on the tranny bolts? I used blue locktite last time and I nearly stripped a couple of them getting them out this time. (Torx T10 - sheesh - give me a break?!?!?) thanks Did you shock the bolts before trying to remove them? I just removed a transmission and must admit was VERY nervous about taking those 3 out that are behind the clutch basket. Was dreading stripping them but made sure I had a correct fitting tool and didn't have a problem. The ones I took out had been loctited and I did use blue loctite when re-installing them. Not sure why our UK bikes have allen/hex bolts and not torx. Just out of curiosity ..... just how tight are you torquing them up to? trialtrial
I did shock them to get them out. which did help. Installing them, I put on blue locktite, but only half way around (this time) - not the full diameter. I torqued them to 8Nm
wayne509
I torqued them to 8Nm Mine were tightened to 7 Nm .... no idea why ..... just felt tight enough.
twinshock giles
Sufficient heat destroys the locktite if its possible you could always warm them with a welding torch to break its hold Edited February 1, 2014 by twinshock giles
ric h
Do not heat it with an Oxy-acetylene torch! A Butane, propane torch will work just fine.Even a heat gun will do the trick.

lotus54
I'd probably locktite them also. I do everything else on bikes...
trialtrial
oops - just got an answer. The tranny bolts are 3mm hex bolts - NOT torx. I just dont want anyone to make the same mistake I did. Also use only a minimal amount of blue locktite. Shock them before loosening. dadof2
Useful tips when undoing any tight fastener. 1) Apply a shock in line with the axis of the fastener whilst applying torque 2) Use a T handle so that torque is applied to the wrench at 2 places at 180 degrees opposite not just one side.
