scarboroughbeta
Hi guys the right fork leg on my beta seems to be leaking but it looks like its coming from the bottom of the fork wiper does this mean this will need replacing or does this happen when the seal goes . lewis cosgrove
Yes and yes, the dust seal and the oil seal that's below both need replacing. You will need something like this : http://www.splatshop.co.uk/skf-fork-oil-dust-seal-kit-paioli-38mm-forks.html
scarboroughbeta
Thanks lewis , just out of interest what causes the dust seal to go , its only a tiny drip i noticed, like i said it just seems to be coming from under the dust seal
dadof2
Seals wear due to abrasive particles of sand mud etc. Damaged fork tubes (usually caused by dropping bike on rocks0 can also cause them to leak.
lewis cosgrove
I suppose over time the seals simply wear and become more brittle, allowing dirt passed the dust seals which will then mess up the actual oil seal below. Even if its a tiny drip it still means the oil seals are failing, it will only get worse. If you do change the seals and put fresh fork oil in remember to be careful when washing the bike, as pointing a hose or ESPECIALLY a pressure washer right on the seals will force dirt down and you'll soon be back to where you started. evoalien
Hello. After you pop the fork seal out inspect it for any nicks or damage to the lip. If there is no visible damage pull the tension spring out of the seal.find where the ends connect and twist it apart. One end will be taperd. Take your side cutters and nip a tad off the nonntaperd end. Twist it back together and put it back in your fork seal. This will tighten the seal and save you some coin. 0007
Most of the time it's just dust plugging the seal and it's not faulty You can make a seal saver or buy one from a dirt bike shop It's just a J hook made from something like a goggle lense, make sure you sand all the sharp edges so you don't cut the seal

rescueman
hi with leaking fork seals try sliding the thinnest feeler gauge blade between the seal and fork tube but clean all the muck off the top of the seal first, then coat the dust seal with Vaseline to stop muck getting in then slide it back into position it works for me
