This is a great site for lots of input. Do us a favor and edit your profile or tell us what part of the world you are in. 4K = Dollars? Euro? Ringitt? Pesos? jonboy883 Posted February 2, 2014 Report Share Posted February 2, 2014 (edited) Dependant on where you are in the UK, the best thing you can do is go along to a dealer test day.......that way you can ride many different bikes without committing to anyone first. The other option is go along to a dealer that has a wide secondhand selection and have a go on one. This is getting harder with the demise of BVM, who had the whole range in stock, secondhand, but can be still achieved. I only name BVM as I'm in the South and don't know many northern dealers, but I know they're there. Final option, go along to a trial, watch the bikes, see them in action, make a mental note of the ones you like the look off, or sound off etc, then go find a secondhand one to view & try out. Most trials riders, if you talk to them at the end of the trial, and ask about their bikes etc etc, most will offer you a go in the car park. dadof2 Posted February 2, 2014 Report Share Posted February 2, 2014 May be easier to suggest something if you said what part of UK you are in On Ebay someone in Derbyshire is selling off a whole range of Yamaha TYs. instead of spending 4k as a beginner you may be better off spending around 1k (probably a bit under) say on a good Ty250R. They are easy to use and you should be able to sell it on for little loss in a few months or a years time. scoobydo Posted February 3, 2014 Report Share Posted February 3, 2014 Hi, If you can afford £3k then my advice is to spend £3k - basically you pay for what you get. The newer the better rule applies. There are lots of good bikes out there - but in my opinion (having recently tested out several new bikes) I have opted to buy an Ossa. ( I had a Beta previously and have owned virtually every make of bike out there over the years) Ossa represent excellent value for money (either used or new) come with an Olins rear shocker which is fantastic and make the bike ride far better than anything else does with out spending extra to upgrade ! The Ossa is full of modern thinking and has moved the game on - whilst others have stood still. Mechanically they make perfect sense - im an engineer and looking at the Ossa lay out to me is engineering sense in that they are easy to work on, everything is in the best position for ease of use / longevity. But the best part is the engine which is fuel injected. They are so smooth and predictable and you feel fully connected with the bike, and for me makes it so easy to ride and focus on the hazzards to ride - not the engine ! All the early bugs are long sorted now on the Ossa (what bike out there hasnt had bugs anyway ? My last bike had for sure !) I would suggest you buy from a dealer - and they will look after you not just on the bike but loyality gains rewards over time. Several friends of mine have Ossa's and they say they would not ride anything else. I think as more people try them the more people will be won over and go out and buy them, you can jump the que so to speak ! hayden2010 Posted April 20, 2014 Report Share Posted April 20, 2014 I am uk too. I also have raced (pro for suzuki) and also in america AMA 750 class. Im 40 and started trials a few month ago. This is a Whole diff kettle of fish, and spending 4k on a bike is ridiculous, especially after youve thrown it at some rocks, logs and such, and its work 1500 at the end of week six!! Spend £1500 on a decent 2005 ish bike, thats reliable and in good nick. Take your time and learn slowly! I started on a cheap Aprilia Climber, battle scarred it to hell, and now have traded up for a montesa 315r (2004) If id spent 4k on the first bike, id be now riding a bag of crap that ive beaten up and wrecked!! gassaman Posted April 22, 2014 Report Share Posted April 22, 2014 Hi Bud, I agree with the two above posts, 4k on your first bike is a bit steep, as said above spend around 1500 on a 05 / 06 bike and take your time, Im 53, just got back into trails after a long lay off and spent 1500 on an a 06 250 bike which is spot on, trails is an excellent sport and you will meet some good people, but like another sport the novelty can wear off quickly...... good luck bud. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
