elliotsdaddy
Morning peeps, Just a quickie......oooo errrrr!.......when kicking my bike, 2007 290, the kickstart doesnt spring back up to where it sits, so I've always got to return it with my boot. Get's kind of tiresome. I haven't had chance to have a look at it yet and seeing as I'm at work I'd thought I'd ask the question. Is there an external spring somewhere that just might need replacing, or is there a mechanism that just needs a bit of lubrication? Ta very much, Chris. lewis cosgrove
Sounds like the kickstart return spring is broken : http://www.splatshop.co.uk/sherco-kick-starting-spring.html Here's a guide on how to change the spring. http://www.splatshop.co.uk/kickstart-return-spring-fitting-guide.html Edited February 10, 2014 by lewis cosgrove
tony27
If the lever doesn't return by itself then it'll be the spring, you'll need the clutch cover gasket as well. The job isn't too bad, needs the clutch cover & clutch removing if my memory serves me correctly

steve_earle
Remember, If the spring is broken make sure you fish out all the broken parts before putting back together. Compare the broken bits to the new one to make sure you have got it all. Seen quite a few posts from people who have done this changing kick start and gear lever springs. Very Important so put a post it note on the bike to remind you!!! Good Luck.
copemech
One thing to keep in mind here ids that it is basically a flyback design, so if you let up on the lever gently it may not fully reset. If it returns most the way, but lacks the last bit, you need to let it fly back to the stop.
elliotsdaddy
Hmmmm it seemed like a straight forward job until now.....might get a quote for a dealer to do it. At least I know it'll be done properly. Not only that, I priced up all the kit, including the recommended clutch tool thingy, and it was about £106....ouch! lewis cosgrove
This is the cheapest clutch holding tool for a sherco i can find, no need to pay £70! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111137408196?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

The tool on Splatshop was £60ish i think....the eBay one seems much more do-able. With the parts now being £50-£60 I think I might have a go after all. elliotsdaddy
.........well it's back to the dealer idea. Had a email confirming that the tool listed on eBay doesn't fit my '07 model. It was worth a shot though. Thanks anyway Lewis. If my local dealer can do the job for how much it would cost me in parts, then it's a no brainer. One question though, with the kickstart spring needing to be replaced, is there a liklihood of damage being caused if the bike is used? Chris. lewis cosgrove
There is no huge difference in motors from 1999 - 2010, only minor tweaks. At the end of the day all the tool has to do is slot into the clutch basket and the center hub which are definitely the same. Have a look at these links, look at the range of years these parts fit. http://www.splatshop.co.uk/sherco-clutch-basket.html http://www.splatshop.co.uk/sherco-clutch-hub.html http://www.splatshop.co.uk/sherco-clutch-friction-plate.html http://www.splatshop.co.uk/sherco-metal-clutch-disc.html And to answer your question about if there could be damage done. If the spring has snapped make sure to find the broken parts and check that the teeth on all the gears are OK. elliotsdaddy
Ah I see that the model range for those items does indeed cover an '07, so for £18 it may be worth a punt. Thanks Lewis.
lewis cosgrove
Splatshop's clutch tool was listed 2001 - 2005 I got a bit worried so email them and they confirmed that it would in fact fit 1999 - 2014. So yeh, i would go ahead with the £18 one. Edited February 12, 2014 by lewis cosgrove
thats_a_five
I have been able to hold some clutches with a simple strap wrench similar to this one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oil-Filter-Strap-Wrench-Large-Size-Garage-Workshop-Mechanics-Oil-Filter-Tool-/301077487554?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item46199ddfc2
