Squeaking

Hi all, just bought an 09 Beta Evo 250 (mint bike) so I went to Warden Law on Sunday for a bit practice. After about 10 mins a squeaking started & im sure it was from the rear brake, this went on for a while. Then I stopped for a cuppa for 10 or 20 mins. Then got on the bike again and it was fine, then after another 10-15 mins it started again.

Can anyone shed some light on this annoying problem.

Thanks Dave

Hmmm Typically the squeak is the pads grabbing and releasing the rotor a tiny bit at a time causing a high speed oscillation. If that's happening usually stepping on the brake lightly stops the pads from vibrating. If you have to step hard to make the squeak go away it is probably something else. Do the brakes work well? Sometimes pads get contaminated with oil and that makes them behave odd. An old trials trick is to ride a bit dragging the brake to heat up the rotor and then pouring water on them. Another thing you might want to check is grab the rear wheel and give it a tug to make sure your wheel bearings are good. A bad bearing can squeal under load. Aluminum frames also have a tendancy to squeak and it's possible you have a moving skid plate or other frame component. Sometimes a targeted squirt of WD40 will eliminate a squeak long enough to identify the offending component. Springs on Betas also tend to squeak. Again a squirt of WD40 can identify.

If you can give us a more through description maybe we can narrow it down a bit more. The jamming on the pedal thing makes me think you're torquing something to kill the squeak so it could be almost anything.

I think squeaks are just one of those Beta things we accept as part of the brand.

when you have been running a while check if the disc is hot and if the rear brake is dragging on. If there is no free play between the pedal and the master cylinder it will seal off the return port and cause rear brake to drag when the fluid expands a little. This is general not Beta specific and is a common problem where people like instant back brake. A colleague had his like this without problem on "pocket handkerchief" trials but had the rear brake lock on almost solid when on a longer time and observation event. in your case it may be coming on just enough to squeal.

Pop it off and give it a good clean. Check fir crud under the rubbers. Push the piston back to make sure it is working properly. Sounds like it just needs some tlc. Good luck.

P.S. Are you going to the trial on the ninth ? I think it`s a Tweed valley trial. It`ll be my first and last this year :( due to illness. Might see you there. Message me if you fancy going and want a buddy to ride with.

Come to think of it, when I got the bike it seemed to be dragging a bit as though the brake was stuck on when I pushed it over to my van. When I got it home I striped it down and cleaned it which involved taking the front and rear wheel off. I cleaned the callipers out and re- fit the back wheel and it seemed a lot smoother. But now after riding it the rear wheel seems not to spin free enough when you spin the wheel off the ground.

So next question is how do I cure it from dragging.

Check all rear pivot points and make sure they are greased. My 2011 Evo had a squeek that turned out to be swingarm bearing that needed lube...quick spray of wd40 to identify.
