toetoe
i have been in touch with gail at earl shilton trials club, to ask if the, all fools trial, on the 16th of this month would cater for me, a complete novice and she said yes, i can just turn up on the day, a friend of mine as said he can take me as long as he is not working away from home, i was just wondering if any of the earl shilton club members could give me some idea what to expect, things like is it rocky or muddy, that kind of thing. regards Tony
ourian
Hi Tony it's mainly muddy, there are rocks around, but as a beginner you won't be going over many rocks. Just come (if you can) have a go, if you don't feel confident at a section just take a five or paddle your way through. There are plenty of beginners riding (me included). Everyone is friendly and helpful. Just remember at this stage the points don't matter, it's gaining experience you need. If the last two ESTC trials are anything to go by there'll be 80-90 riders, so you'll get a bit of queuing at some sections. If you don't complete all the sections, don't worry just enjoy the day. The trial starts at 10.30 but I think there is a presentation at this one so it maybe a little later. I usually aim to get there by 9.30, saves rushing around and gives you chance to check bike over, have a little practice (not on the sections though) you can take a look at the sections and have a cuppa from the burger van etc. There are no toilets on site unless you include the hedges that is. The main parking area gets pretty full early on, so park this side of the motorway bridge, there is an area on the left between the motorway bridge and a chain link fence to park, do not park this side of the chain link fence it's private land or there is a grass verge opposite on the right you can use, if in doubt ask. There are a few videos on youtube which give you an idea of what the ground is like.
toetoe
it sounds like it is just the ticket, i was hoping it was more mud than rock because it doesn't hurt as much when you fall and i will probably be doing some of that, it's all down to my friend now, if he can take me then i will be their, i phoned the dvla on friday and they said my application was still in a cue but i should here something within the next two weeks, if all goes well i think i will make myself a member of earl shilton club as it is one of the closest clubs to me and it has a practice ground i can go to on a week day, thanks ourian for the information. wobblenorbed
Good luck. Enjoy the day and don`t let the nerves spoil your fun. They usually wear off after a couple of sections.
toetoe
I will definitely be a bit nervous but that doesn't really stop me from doing something, i can be competitive but as ourian suggested, i will not be bothering about my points it will be reward enough just by taking part and making new friends, my wife is talking about us buying a motorhome so that we can travel to different meetings around the country and take the dogs with us and maybe stay for a few days so if everything goes to plan, getting into trials riding will make quite a big change in our life's and i get to travel the country as a bonus.

Just watch what I do and you'll soon see where all the soft spots are, I'm sure there's a mud magnet hidden in my helmet. If you do join it'll be the best £50 you spend this year, it's an excellent place, but play safe don't go on your own, it's a bit remote. As for the nerves you'll soon loose them once you complete a section, no matter what your score is and by the end you'll be grinning from ear to there
toetoe
i have thought about the risks of riding on my own, I don't have any friends who are into trials but i was hoping to make some new friends at meetings, my problem is i don't make friends easy because i had mouth cancer and had most of my tongue removed so people can't understand me very well at first but they don't give it chance to get to know me, they seem to think i'm mentally ill and walk of from me as soon as i try to speak to them, i try my best but you would be really surprised how people can treat someone like me, bus drivers have refused to let me on their bus because they think i have been drinking or they are so ignorant they don't even give me the time to write it down for them so i have had to walk home but from what people have said or things i have read, people who do trials riding for an hobby tend to be good sort, so it could be just what i'v been looking for, it normally takes about 30 minuets of chatting to me and then you can understand most of what i say, i'm really looking forward to the 16th, it will be nice to ride my bike some where other than my back garden and hopefully make new friends. ourian
Tony if you do manage to get to the all fools trial and would like a buddy for the day, here's a pic of my bike and helmet, I'll be happy to ride with you, just introduce yourself when you get there - Ian
