Road Trial - One Day Insurance

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anybody have any experience of insuring a trials bike for a road trial for just one day?

I have the chance to ride my fathers Enfield in a local road trial (in preparation for the Scottish Pre 65 - where there is the option to purchase road top up insurance with your entry fee).

The bike is road reg'd and already insured for the road under my dads policy but obviously just for him.

I have a full bike license so assume it should be quite possible, but just wondering if anybody has any experience of doing this and if so through which companies? Will general insurers do this or will I need to approach an off road specialist company? Will it be easier to add me as a named driver on his existing policy for a day? Think his policy is with MSM.

Any advice will be very much appreciated,

Cheers

Scott

I'd imagine it only applies to insuring your own bike, in other words a bike that is registered to you, as this is generally a standard requirement to insure a vehicle

For a definitive answer you need to speak to the insurers themselves as the answers you get on here will no doubt vary.

Have you spoken to the event secretary?

They may be offering one day ACU RTA insurance you can buy at the start, useful for those like me with an insurance policy that excludes trials. The club/secretary have to arrange the paperwork with ACU/Locktons prior to the event so may not be doing this. Not sure of the age limitaions of this scheme as at 50 years old with no penality points I have no issues.

Thanks twinshock & woody. You're right you can only insure a bike that is registered in your name. Hence I was only left with one real option - be added to my Dad's policy as a named driver. Fortunately this was quite possible and only cost £25 for 'admin'. I was wrong, his insurance is actually with Footman James.

I tried to get a quote from footman James, explained about having supplementary insurance from ACU, they refused to even quote me. Check that your actually covered. I have no history of claims, or ave issues.
