hoggyf Posted April 3, 2014 Report Share Posted April 3, 2014 Considering changing from my 2004 Rev3 250 to a 4T - just becuase I like the noise really, oh and it'd be easier not mixing fuel Had a search on here last night but can't find many buying advice threads so....... I know the rev3 has hot start issues which can be solved and I've read about kick start issues but anything else to look for??? Are the four strokes like the the 2's and need refreshing after a while, i.e. piston rings etc or is it just setting the valves and general servicing. With a 2T the costs of refreshing are reasonably cheap but I can see a 4T being expensive. The other question is why are they so much cheaper than a Mont 4RT?? is it just the bling factor with the Mont?? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mine was a very early ex-demo bike which had clearly had a lot of use but, apart from looking fairly "lived-in" everything was sound. I found cold starting to be the main issue but you soon get the knack. The rear brake pedal pivot has the same design fault as the Rev 3. The valves rarely need re-setting (mine never did) I always felt a bit too big for mine, though it always had plenty of power (250) especially if you revved it - and they love to rev! The only reason I can see for 4RT's being more expensive is build quality, though I never found any problem. My advice is - go for it, find one with a 'quiet' engine and don't be afraid to rev it's nuts off! Good luck 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Othe than that had no problems with mine they run like a watch , just changed oil and filter regular , had no probs with hot start on mine , grip really well if you feed the power in slowly not just dump the clutch ,then it will spin to eternity 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

evoalien Posted April 4, 2014 Report Share Posted April 4, 2014 First off! If the engine dosent sound like a fine tuned sewing machine ther is something wrong with. They should be almost whisper quiet ! Unlike the monty's. As for kick over hot or cold! JUST REMEMBER. cycle the kick start slowly a cple times then give it a nice soft kick. At the bottom of the stroke pop the throttle just a tad and you will have no problems. I ran a 08 250 in expert class and it did everything i asked it to. Run good oil because they lubricate clutch and top end with the same oil. The monty runs two seperate lubrication sysyems.make sure the air filter is alwayse clean and do not over oil it as the 250 4ts will get choked out with to much filter oil. You do all that and realistically you should not have to touch the valves. A guy who had bigger arms than my legs & built like a brick **** house along with two others on the 2013 Evo 4t . They all thought they had got they're monies worth.He said it pulled him easy. One had come from a 2011 4RT and found his bike, and i quote his words,easier to handle in a section. The only complaint any of them had was one had had a rev 4 and the water pump impeller had disintegrated . Later talked to a guy who's 2t 2011 250 Beta Evo had done the same . Think my self i'm going to take the plunge and get the 250 4t Evo. Thought seriously about the Mont 4rt 260 , and the quality is definitely there, but it sound like a fart. nottoogood Posted April 11, 2014 Report Share Posted April 11, 2014 Rode a 300 4T a few weeks ago: 1. Huge! 2. Heavy! 3. Powerful! Feels like its carrying a boat anchor underneath the tripletree. WFO from idle in first gear will result in a near orbital experience. But they do look razor sharp! The owner also has a newer Ossa...only rides the Beta 4T when the Ossa is broke down...so he rides the Beta most of the time (zing!). hoggyf Posted May 20, 2014 Author Report Share Posted May 20, 2014 Went to buy one last night - 2008 Rev4 - looked tidy in the pics but it was 1.5hrs drive so chatted witht he guy and found an older guy who'd tried trials but found it too hard so just pottered round his garden so we set off last night, cash in pocket. Nice house and gardens and well looked after (always a good sign in my mind) bike looked clean and tidy, typical beta sticky clutch when you first set off, but ran nicely clean plastics and wheels, bit of frame damage but nothing too bad then I spied a little bit of an oil leak from the head gasket then a large washer behind the bolt head on the top engine mount - engine mount was cracked!! Made him a cheeky offer but walked away, I don't hink the guy knew to be honest and I'm glad I found it before buying but gutted for the fella. Is either of these common problems on the REV 4?? hoggyf Posted June 22, 2014 Author Report Share Posted June 22, 2014 Finally bought a rev4 was a little rough but after some spokes repaired a good clean etc it was ready for today's outing the CCMC Centenary trial. Cracking bit of land which I've never ridden on before but really enjoyed it. 4t is a Bit different but on steep loose climbs it found grip where my rev3 would have spun I'm sure, struggled a bit with it a boulder field section until a mate turned the tickover down a touch, totally different bike after that. It might take me a couple of trials to really get to grip with it but ,after today's outing got to say I don't regret buyIng one - well chuffed 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
