Who Insures Trials Bikes (Unregistered) For Fire & Theft?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Been looking to insure my new Gas Gas (not yet picked up) for fire & theft from home as it will be worth £5k+. I tried Carole Nash off road insurance and they won't insure anything over £5k at all.

I can't find anyone else. MSM only cover road registered bikes but I don't need to register it on the road and doing that will also make it more expensive as I'll have to tax it as well as register and insure it.

Anyone else do off road theft insurance?

There are various problems with un registered bikes from an insurers point of view, firstly they will not show on the insurers database (starts alarm bells ringing) and secondly if stolen they are less likely to be recovered.

I suggest you register your bike. If you register it for off road only it is free and you never have to bother about VED or SORN.

If you tax it for on road use there is an initial registration fee of £50 (I think that is current amount) and about £40 for 6 months VED but you can cancel that after a month for 5 months refund, and put the bike on SORN,

I strongly suggest you register your bike, get a V5 registration document then stamp the registration number on as many parts as you can. A set of 4mm stamps costs only about a £tenner from Screwfix or Toolstation.

To register for off road only phone DVLA at Swansea and ask them to send you the documents

In addition to their documents you will need proof of ownership, you should get a certificate of newness with the bike this will enable the registration to be age related (not Q plate or whatever current equivalent is)

Once bike has a number and is on DVLA database it should come up on insurers databases and you will be able to put it into insurance comparison websites to get a quote.

I've called loads as my house insurance didnt want to know. I decided on a company called "doodson". I'd never heard of them but they specialize in this type of cover. I'm covered for my Gas Gas txt pro (£4500) and sons Clipic 80 (£1500) at home, in the van and at a venue. premium cost £300!! They also included tools and wot not. Worth a call for a quote. 0161 419 3000. Tom

Finally managed to get a quote from Carole Nash based on the reduced price of £4,700 for the new Gas Gas Pro 300 Standard (although they couldn't find the exact bike on the system!).

They want £199 with a £100xs. From what others say that seems about right. Also get £250 tool cover and a DNA+ marking kit for free.

I think registering as an off road bike is also a good idea, even if it just helps identify the bike on the insurance database. I can then etch the reg number on parts of the bike. Along with a ground anchor, chains, alarmed garage and cctv camera not sure there's much else I can do. To be honest, I'm happy with my security (as much as you can be) whilst I'm just at work/home. It's when I go on holiday for a couple of weeks that worries me. Due to the value of the bike I'm going to go with the insurance.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Quick update - tried MSM Insurance but they wanted £235 and it needs to be road registered adding to the cost.

Spoke to DVLA about registering as an off road vehicle and you will only get a Q plate - there's no option of getting an age related plate even for a new bike.

Will stick with Carole Nash and not registering (other than with DNA+).

  • 7 months later...

FYI (and I know this post was originally put here in April) but I have just off-road registered mine with DVLA and have an age related plate as I sent them the Year of Manufacture certificate. Just so you know it doesn't have to end with a Q plate........
