Disaster! Broken Lower Engine Mounts.

I wouldn't use it anymore, you're gonna put strains in other places that could for instace damage other mounting points or make the existing damage worse.

A specialist welder might be able to fix it,but it's an elaborate work and it would probably be necessary to make reïnforcements to the mounting point.

Aluminium castings usually contain contaminations that make it hard to make a strong weld, and if it's magnesium it's even more difficult to weld if not impossible.

A second hand part might be the best solution if you can find one. This might help: http://www.allensusedtrialsspares.co.uk/#

Good luck with the repair.

Dont need lead in airfilter when the guy on top weighs almost 100 kg.. :-)

No I dont have a story for this.. Bought the bike may last year only 6 month old. A 2012 Raga 280 btw. First owner was one of the elite guys. Shouldnt surprise me if the crack has been there all the time.

What I found out later today is that the swingarm bolt was loose, and that the hole in the frame has become oval. Dont know if that is the cause of the crack, or because af the crack.. Anyway the bike is a wreck until this is fixed.. Anyone got a good advice for the oval hole in the frame? :wall:

Now its time for a beer.. Cheers

Pro crankcases used to be weldable metal, its about 3 or 4 years since I did some. TIG with 4043 filler. As well as thoroughly V ing out the crack and filling it with weld add some reinforcing plates if possible.

Looks to me the previous owner slammed rocks hard and bent the skidplate causing metal to metal contact. Oil soaking the rubber bumpers makes it soft. I use a 16 lb sledgehammer to bend the skidplate so it has enough clearance and put a piece of tire in between.

I would definitely NOT recommend riding it like this. I think that the engine is a stressed member so without these bolts holding the engine, there will be additional stress placed on the other parts of the frame, in particular the welds near the steering head. I know that around that time of manufacture there were some weld failures of the frames near the steering head so I would take a very close inspection of that area as well.

For the swing arm, hole, the best option to repair would be to bore the hole out round, press in a sleeve and line bore the hole to be properly aligned with the other side of the bike. It could be possible that the mounts broke and the frame got bent enough to put excess stress on the swing arm bearings. Or it took a major hit breaking the mounts and bending the frame at the same time.

Either way, it's not a happy day for you.

Bought a 2013 GasGas Pro ,and low and behold the swinging arm bolt was loose. Didn't notice at first because it has frame protectors on .Maybe everyone reading this should go and make sure there's isn't loose or we could end up with the same unfortunate result . Check after every trial too .

How unfortunate jandyb.

I broke both sides of the engine mount in this area on my 2004. Sorry to say that if this can't be welded you will need both case halfs.

To Shyted point you need to make sure that your skid plate is also tight before every ride!!!! The engine is a stress member of the frame. So is the skid pan. If your skid pan is lose then the engine has to hold the whole thing together. Word to the wise is to check your skid pan often and re-arch it when you are in doubt.

Thanks guys.

Sure it is the magnesium halfes. I dont know if I will bother try to find someone to weld.

Ill go for the alucases. They are not "That badly" priced, and will do the job. Beeing the 2012 Raga it of cause has the retractable gear shift axle. Anybody know the part number for the right half?

I was thinking about using a washer for the oval hole in the frame. If I find a perfecty sized one it should just be to put it in and bolt..

Jandyb,

I've had quite a bit on mag welding completed on my bikes from engine cases to wheels which really have to be strong. If you get a high percentage mag welding filler rod the weld will work. The rods tend to cost about 10 pounds each and I think you'll need a maximum of two. In my experience a good mag weld is very strong. My welder would charge about 100 pounds for that job.I have some rods which will save you buying an expensive pack of 10.

Good luck with what ever you decide.
