arun1664
I know its a bit barn door & bolting horses, but I just slapped down a deposit on a 2001 290, seems ok to me though it has a bit of a clutch rattle (gets quieter when you pull the clutch in). I think I paid a low enough price to allow for a bit of work, but has anybody got any thoughts on whether this is a problem or not & what I should else should I check out when I get it up on the workbench. Thanks in advance ... Mike
stuessenhigh
THINK the water pump seals were prone to "going" on the early SHercos...THINK the 2000 had a single seal and then '01 onwards had a double seal?? ANyway...I'll get me coat and shut up...leave it to more expert advice that you'll get soon. Mate of mine has the same Sherco, and loves it..so I'm sure you'll be pleased with it. wayne thais
I just did some trading and now have a 2002 that has been ridden hard and put away dirty. It needed main bearings and seals, also replaced the output bearing and seal on the main shaft (countershaft bearing). After putting it back together it is still noisy so it will get a new piston assembly including wrist pin and bearings. The engine was very easy to take apart and put back together, and the parts were not that expensive. I will have probably around $500 US dollars in the complete overhaul. I did use the manual that Bill Ibsen put together that shows how to take the engine apart and put it back together. This manual is available on the www.rypusa.com website. I would suggest that you look at all of the above areas. I can't remember what causes the clutch noise you are talking about however I am confident someone else will. I agree that you should look at the waterpump shaft and seals. The "01" is a very nice bike. Wayne
copemech
Some "chatter" is normal when idleing in neutral due to gear backlash. Seems I recall a change to the aluminum water pump impeller in '01 '01 had the "low" first gear which many liked!
howard wallace
Don`t worry about the clutch rattle, it`s just the straight cut gears on the end of the crank, and the clutch basket that get a resonance at idle. Load the clutch up in gear and it will go away. 03 to 05 have damper rubbers between the clutch gear and basket that stop this noise. Recommend you replace the water pump seals and shaft, but check if yours has a 1 mm hole in the front of the water pump engine case first, this is a signal hole, so if the seals have gone, some water will be coming out of it. Seal and shaft replacement is about a half hour job. Wouldn`t hurt to take the head off ,and de-carbon the head, and crown of the piston.Did an 00 and 01 recently and they had a fair build up . You`ll need new O-Rings to re assemble though. Bullet proof bike though, I`m sure you`ll enjoy it.
