ymirtrials
Recently had a look at the muffler on my '10 4rt and it appears that it is leaking a bit where the two ends are riveted into the main aluminum body of the muffler. This is my first four stroke bike..... I'd be interested to know how often I should expect to repack the muffler and also what is the difference between four stroke and two stroke packing? Do 4 strokes get louder like 2 strokes when it is time to repack? I've only had the bike for a couple of months and I'm not sure if it is louder than it should be or not. jrsunt
The 4RT does not have muffler packing and I have not noticed any real change in the sound as the years go by. When I heard yours last weekend in Revelstoke, it sounded normal to me. There is packing in the silencer, at the front pipe end it is a very dense material which tends not to burn out, the rest of the silencer body is a more conventional packing material. Probably worth packing it while you've got it apart. Use a good quality heat resistant silicone to seal it together. Normal silicone will burn out. The FMF packing that I've bought in the past for my 2 stroke was labelled as such, what might the difference be between the one marked 2 versus the one marked 4 stroke? I still have some of the 2 stroke stuff left over....
