rlk_76
Question for the Americans. I'm looking to get a few of the big wooden wire/cable spools for training. I'd like to just use the hub, cut in half as little obstacles. Does anyone know where to source these? Construction companies, city works, utility companies? I've checked Craigslist for freebies but no luck. Any tips greatly appreciated. Thanks! Ryan
lineaway
The big ones you want are being reused any more. Try IPL`s local yard. With all those trees you need a fake log? Good Luck.
mags
If you don't get any spools Bobcat or Tractor tyres are easily sourced an usually free from truck tyre fitting places. Lay flat, fill centre with dirt or cut thick ply and wire to inside bead on one side? 2 worn car tyres cut in semi circle and wired side by side would give an obstacle 4 tyres wide and half a tyre high??? Use 1/8 drill bit and 1/8 wire to tie them. All wiring done on under side through beads so no punctures from exposed wire ends... be careful there. rlk_76
Thanks for the help. @lineaway.. We have lots of trees but I wanted something that can be moved around and hidden from the neighborhood association when I'm not riding. I have a few logs, but they aren't very mobile. Mind you i live on a normal lot so not a lot of room.
biffsgasgas
We get a ton of them from the utility contractors. There was a time where we could stop by every week and they were happy to pass them along. A tip is to cut a flat into the bottom at the base of the inner spool. They can still roll, the inner spool will stay together and they won't move on you. If you see a city worker or a utility guy working just pull over and ask. That has worked for us here in Michigan. --Biff
