dazfitness
Hi I've just purchased a really clean example of a montesa 248 but have very limited mechanical knowledge and was hoping for some advice... I know it's a 2 stroke pre mix and been advised to use a 40-1 mix ? But I went to buy some gear oil and was sold engine oil (10/30 I think) is the gear oil & engine oil the same thing ? Do I just undo the drain plug and replace the oil ? And if so how much . Thanks in advance...
kingscorpion
You'll need SAE 10W30 for the clutch and SAE 90 for the gearbox (API 4 if possible). 300 cc in both cases. I think that is 10,5 GB fl oz. Mix can be 1,5% with modern synthetic oils.
dazfitness
That's great thanks, and I don't mean to be a tad slow but there's two fill holes I take it that's clutch and gearbox ?
kingscorpion
The outer one is for the clutch and the inner one for the gearbox. To drain the clutch, use the big round screw at the lower right side of the engine's left case.
dazfitness
Great I'll do that tomorrow, would it hurt to use 10w30 for both ?
kingscorpion
Yes. It is not a great idea. You need a lighter oil for the clutch and a heavier one for the gearbox. Try to find an API GL-4 if possible, because API GL-5 sulphuric additives will corrode the yellow metals inside the gearbox.
