terrier
Hi guy's, I'm in Somerset, Uk with a 2001 290. Shes been brilliant and bulletproof last year, but after a ride today we have gear selection issues. I have a comp next weekend, so with a heads up on advice here, I can get sorted. The fault is when correctly up changing through the box to 30mph no probs, but will not index down through the box. It just bulks and goes firm, and the clutch is clearing ok. (In hindsight I should have tried back up to go down when I was riding) anyway, if I stopped the motor, It would go down to neutral and 1st. I have just gone to check the bike before posting this, and it looks like the gear change lever is not springing back, so I'm guessing a selector spring broken?????. I would appreciate some experienced input on likely culprit and list of probable bits and gaskets I would need so I can quickly get an order in tomorrow. dadof2
Near certain the gear selector spring, about £4.80 from splat shop. You will need to remove the clutch to replace it, so if you don't have one already a clutch holding tool will be needed. About an hours job. You can usually do it without replacing the clutch case gasket. You have to take the gear lever off and pull the gearchange shaft through to the clutch side so polish any rust and sharp edges off with emery or you will need a new oil seal as well. Do not start the engine until its fixed, if the broken bit of spring goes between clutch basket and crank pinion you will have a lot bigger bill. terrier
Thank Do2 , my thoughts too. I'll update tomorrow if I have time, and no, I won't run it untill the fiend is retrieved. The box goes into gear ok and retains gear, just the lever has a flop on!
terrier
Well, clutch cover off to find the lower leg of the selector spring cracked but still attached. Simple job, but thanks for the info befor openning. I've ordered all 3 springs there while I have her open. (Kickstart, selector and index).
