Start with the dating certificate / certificate of newness as without that your stuck. The link to the VMCC (Vintage Motor Cycle Club) above takes all the trouble away by downloading the necessary form, http://www.vmcc.net/media/file/SOS%20form.pdf taking some pictures or rubbings and let them sort it. The DVLA will now only accept dating letters from certain organisations / owners clubs listed on the DVLA web site. The cost is £17.00 for VMCC members & £27.50 for non members. Prices at other clubs varies. See link below for DVLA approved owners clubs. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/399932/V765X1_280115.pdf.

Another option is to use an agent for all the paperwork. Try http://www.dvlaadvice.co.uk/. I can't recommend as I've never used them for the full service but for £95.00 it may solve a lot of heartache and head scratching!

Don't get lazy and go for a "Q" plate as your regret it when it comes to insuring your bike. Insurers just double, sometimes treble the premiums when you can actually find one that excepts "Q" plates.

Next for your NOVA1 application which is the paperwork that the DVLA & HMRC use to establish if any duty / VAT is liable on the bike. Have a read on this link. http://fbhvc.co.uk/about-us/news/_article/22/hmrc-issues-guidelines-for-registering-restoration-projects-imported-prior-to-nova/ . You could use a firm that does this online. It cost's between £40 & £50 but avoids many delays. http://www.dvlaadvice.co.uk/.

Order on line a V55/5 application form and the relevant completion guide as these take a week or so to arrive as they can't be downloaded. https://forms.dft.gov.uk/order-dvla-forms/ The VMCC site link above has some tips on what fields to fill in and leave blank. Note. On Type Approval put "Exempt Trials Motorcycle".

Once you have all this paper work get the bike MOT'd on it's frame number if it's over 3 years old. Best have a daylight one for trials. No lights, speedo or number plate required. Must have a working horn. £15.00 will get you a 9 volt battery Mega Horn on ebay that you just strap to the bars. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/111551017572?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&chn=ps&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

Then get the bike insured on the frame number. Most company's will insure for 2 weeks then cancel your policy if you don't go back to them with a registration number. I use Bennetts or MSM http://www.msminsurance.co.uk/personal-insurance/motor/motorcycle-trials-enduro as they seem to know what a trial bike is a have good rates for on road competition use. http://www.bennetts.co.uk/bennettsbikeinsurance/?SRC=161855699&gclid=CIeXv6rV-sMCFQLMtAodWy0A5A. Carole Nash do insure bikes third party fire & theft only by frame number for 12 months but is usually more expensive. http://www.carolenash.com/get-a-quote/quote/dna_promotion/index_ooo.html?gclid=CO6lt5PM-8MCFUHItAodTzkA0A

Make copies then send recorded/registered delivery to the DVLA at Swansea, The V55/5 form, MOT certificate (If applicable), Insurance policy, dating letter / certificate of newness, NOVA reference from HMRC, Money for tax if bike is after Jan 74 about £37.00 for 12 months for a 250cc & first registration fee which is £55 at present. Proof of address like a Gas or Electricity bill. Wait about 10 days or less and if all well you will get a V5 in the post with a age related registration number. If the bike is pre January 1st 1974 the road tax will be Free of charge as it's classed as an historic vehicle. If the frame number was previously on the DVLA data base & had been stolen, expect a visit from your local Bobby!

Don't forget to call the insurer with the registration number you've been allocated and get a number plate made up. Good flexi ones on ebay in what ever size you want...http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=flex+number+plate&_from=R40%7CR40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xflexi+number+plate.TRS0&_nkw=flexi+number+plate&_sacat=0

A wireless mountain bike speedo can be added if you really want to be totally road legal, Most don't bother.

Note. Other bikes .... If the bike manufacture / importer is still in business like Gasgas UK for Gassers and Beta UK for Betas etc etc just contact them first and they will for a small fee produce the necessary paper work for dates and NOVA, (Notification of Vehicle Arrival). If the bike was a personal import then they will be unable to help and you should follow the steps in this guide.

Total to road register a bike using the service providers is roughly £28.00 for the VMCC, £50.00 for NOVA1 agent & £55.00 first registration fee totaling £133.00. If you bypass the NOVA agent and deal with HMRC yourself you could save the £50.00 but this could add 2 - 4 weeks onto the process as they are slow but usually helpful. You should also be aware that recent personal imports that have not been NOVA'd will be liable to Tax / VAT / Import duty that must be paid in full before you can complete the registration. The MOT (if applicable), Insurance and road fund licence are yearly payments that you would have to pay anyway.

Occasionally the authorities will be asked to do a spot check on the bike in question before accepting the registration, Beware, make sure the frame / engine numbers are correct on your application!
