the five star
Hi guys, first time on the forum and here for help! I need a quantity of trials marker pins, the ones made out of 3mm wire about 450-500 mm long with a 50mm coil on the top in to which you can clip a card. A while ago I had some from Castrol but lost the contact number for the marketing dept. If anyone has it it would be a great help or alternatively anywhere else I can get some from. Anyone bought any recently? Thanks!

p@ul250
We make our own. Buy a coil of fencing wire, use a piece of round timber with a slot cut in the top( I have an old chair leg) Cut the wire into lengths of your choosing and with the timber in a vice, pop the end of the wire in the slot and wind the wire round one and a half turns. Then repeat until you have the desired number of marker pins.
the five star
Thanks guys but we are looking for around 200 for the club. The Castrol ones were around 50p each and made of a tensile steel material which are durable with some resistance to bending. The AMCA sold them at one time but apparently not now. They must have got them from somewhere. Plain wire is ok up to a point but the springyness is needed for the clip part at the top and they need the tensile strength to push in to hard ground. Any more ideas please? I am hoping a club has got hold of some recently and can tell me from where. Thanks again.
idmcc_sec
What about these flags, already made. http://www.yorksurvey.co.uk/marking/page11/
the five star
We decided not to use the flg type as the wire is very thin and there is risk of injury if a rider should fall face down on one. The ones we are looking for have a 50mm ring on the top which is just about impossible to get impaled on. All suggestions welcome, keep trying guys! idmcc_sec
OK, they're dead easy to make as in the post above (p@ul250) and they won't be anywhere near as expensive as the ones on ebay! Just takes a bit of time to do, but what are Club volunteers for eh?
the five star
Yes, he plain wire ones would be easy to make but the proper ones are 3mm steel which has been tempered a bit like spring steel to resist bending when hit. - try straightening out a factory made one and you will see what I mean. This is also why the coil on the top retains its strength as a springy clip. Someone must have bought these recently, there are thousands out there. Anyone help? Just to recap, trials marker pin, approx 450-500 mm long, 3mm steel wire with a 50mm loop on top to clip a card in. Need around 200. Where did you get yours from, and a supplier contact number or email address would be great. Cheers guys.

jordi
See post #2. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRIALS-SECTION-MARKER-PEGS-10-PACK-GALVANISED-3MM-STEEL-TREBLE-HOOPS-/231494758487?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6393
the five star
Hi, thanks jordi. The ebay ones are made from a roll of galvanised fencing wire and will bend very easily. The proper ones , being a tempered steel will be like a coiled spring at the top and always grip the card and not bend when hit. Still looking! Anybody else's club use the factory made ones?
steve_earle
I remember the wire ones used to come from Castrol, They are good but in the summer you need to hammer a screwdriver in 1st to make a hole as they don't like hard ground or stones. We went over to the new type flags a few years ago but we sometimes use the big wire ones to hold the orange arrows to point the direction of the next section. If your worried about safety of the thin wire markers just make a 10mm slit in the flag at the top and bend the top part round with some long nose pliers. The problem we found with the big wire ones is you need a hammer and anvil to make them straight again as they are 3-4mm thick.
hrmad
I've just bought 20 markers from trialendurodirect.com 4.38, I can't remember how much the postage was. I am concerned about falling on one and spiking myself. I've bought them for practice purposes. I was thinking of wrapping celo tape to the tops of them or I might try steve_earles suggestion. Going to try them out Saturday. Edited March 12, 2015 by hrmad
timp
Just use 2.5mm high tensile galvanised fencing wire from an agricultural merchant. this has the desired springiness and strength.
